The Update | Australian Pink Floyd Coming to Covelli; Installation Artist to Lecture

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Australian Pink Floyd Show will come to Covelli Centre on Sept. 15.

The concert experience recreates the Pink Floyd concert experience and strives for accuracy. It uses a laser show, video animation, a high-resolution screen and other special effects.

Installation Artist in Online Lecture

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University’s Department of Visual & Dramatic Arts will present an art lecture by installation artist and sculptor Elana Herzog, who will give a free online lecture at noon Tuesday, Feb. 8.

It can be accessed at Art.ysu.edu.

Herzog is best known for her abstract, tactile works in which she disassembles, reconfigures and embeds second-hand textiles in walls, modular panels and architectural spaces with industrial-grade metal staples.

Dana Ensemble, James Suggs in Concert

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Trumpeter and Dana School of Music alumnus James Suggs and vocalist Evelyn Wright will join The Dana Ensemble in concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, in Bliss Hall’s Ford Theater on Youngstown State University.

The concert, titled “A Lovely Way to Spend the Evening,” will be a collection of songs from the Great American Songbook arranged specifically for this concert by Dana Professor David Morgan.

The event is free and open to the public. Masks are required in all YSU buildings. 

Suggs began playing the trumpet at 9 years of age. At 15, he started playing professionally with jazz groups in northeastern Ohio and occupied the first chair position in the Canton Youth Symphony. Suggs graduated from the Dana School of Music in 2003. 

Evelyn Wright, a professional singer for more than three decades with experience in jazz, R&B and pop is the featured vocalist.

The Dana Ensemble is comprised of a flexible, modular roster of Dana School of Music faculty, which will often be joined by regional guest artists, coming together multiple times each semester for live performances in the area’s iconic performance spaces.

The Dana Ensemble personnel for this concert includes Wendy Case, violin; Sara Schaft, violin; Caitlin Hedge, viola; Kivie Cahn-Lipman, cello; Kathryn Umble, flute; Alice Wang, clarinet; Dave Kana, tenor saxophone; Joseph Carucci, baritone saxophone; Sean Yancer, French horn; Andrew Mitchell, trombone; Cicilia Yudha, piano; Dave Morgan, double bass; and Glenn Schaft, drums.

Friendly Squares Monthly Dance

NILES, Ohio – The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance, Saturday, Feb. 12, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, 14 E. State St.. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. Valentines will be the theme for the dance. This will be a High/Low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. There is a $6 donation per person at the door.
