The Update | Ballet Names New Directors; Valley Chefs in Tasting Event

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Ballet Western Reserve has named Emily Pasquale as school director and Savannah Lach as director of enrollment and community outreach.

Both are longtime instructors at BWR and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to their new roles, said Danielle Perrotta, BWR’s executive and artistic director.

The downtown ballet school will present its annual performance of “The Nutcracker” at Powers Auditorium on Dec. 7 and 8. It will also perform the show Dec. 14 at the Greenville Symphony in Greenville, Pa.

Tickets for the Youngstown performances will be on sale by Aug. 1 at deyorpac.org or by calling the box office at 330 259 9651. Tickets for the Greenville production can be purchased at thegreenvillesymphony.org. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for both productions. 

Auditions for “The Nutcracker” will take place Aug. 24. They are open to community members, experienced and unexperienced, age 4 to adult. Go to balletwesternreserve.org for details.

Chefs Team Up for Charity Fundraiser

NILES, Ohio – Chefs for Charity, a new event that will bring together 23 local restaurants, will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Eastwood Event Centre.

Many of the Valley’s finest chefs will showcase one of their specialty dishes at the event, with guests given the opportunity to enjoy delicious tastings.

The evening will also include music by Backbeat, raffles, a cast bar and other activities.

It will be hosted by Bishop David J. Bonnar, bishop of Youngstown, and will raise money for programs that stabilize housing for those in need and eliminate homelessness in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

Mark Farner’s American Band Coming to Robins

WARREN, Ohio – Mark Farner’s American Band will come to the Robins Theatre on Thursday, Oct. 24, for an 8 p.m. concert.

Tickets range from $25 to $55 (plus applicable fees) and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at robintheatre.com and the box office, 160 E. Market St.

A presale will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday for members of Friends of the Robins Theatre.

Farner was the lead singer, lead guitarist and chief songwriter for Grand Funk Railroad, one of the world’s biggest rock bands in the 1970s.

Grand Funk’s hits include “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home),” “Bad Time,” “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “Foot Stompin’ Music,” “Heartbreaker,” “Locomotion,” “Mean Mistreater” and “We’re an American Band.”

Mystery Novelist to Appear at Library Event

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mystery writer Sandra Brown will be the guest speaker at the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County’s annual author event Sept. 19.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception at the Main Library, 305 Wick Ave.

The Texas-based Brown is the author of more than 70 bestsellers, including “Overkill,” “Blind Tiger,” “Thick as Thieves,” “Outfox,” “Tailspin,” “Seeing Red,” “Sting” and “Mean Streak.”

Writing professionally since 1981, Brown has published more than 80 novels and has upwards of 80 million copies of her books in print worldwide. Her work has been translated into 34 languages.

She appeared in 2010 on Investigation Discovery’s series “Hardcover Mysteries.” Television movies have been made of her novels “French Silk,” “Smoke Screen,” “Ricochet” and “White Hot.”

Still Life Exhibitions on Display at The Hoyt

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – Two new exhibitions of still life painting at the Hoyt explore the human condition. Both are on display through Sept. 19.

Laurie Hoen’s collection of oils in the Main Galleries, titled “Our Storied Journey,” challenges the viewer to question social and environmental issues facing America today, including immigration, social unrest, violence, racial and economic justice and environmental stewardship. Most include birds as representation of life, nature or people.

“Reflections,” a collection of still lifes by Yelena Kukharenko in the Walkway Gallery, invites viewers to reflect upon the simple beauty of common things. Her subject matter is the interplay of colors, textures and light created by the combined objects.

A public reception featuring a meet and greet with the artists is planned from noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 17. Admission is free. The museum is at 124 E. Leasure Ave.

Trumbull Hospital to Present Family Fun Day

WARREN, Ohio – Trumbull Regional Medical Center will host a Family Fun Day in partnership with the United Way of Trumbull County from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, in the upper parking lot of the hospital. 

Admission is free. The event will include free health screenings, free books for the first 100 children, school supplies, face painting, firetrucks and other attractions.

Several organizations will have a presence at the event, including STAT helicopter, Trumbull County EMA, Howland Fire, EMT Ambulance, Warren Police, Patriot, 717 Credit Union and the Animal Welfare League.
