The Update | ‘Billboards’ Photo Exhibit at the Butler; Fleetwood Gold, Red Wanting Blue Tickets on Sale

YOUNGSTOWN – “Billboards,” an exhibition by Pittsburgh-based photographer Mark Perrott, will open Sunday, Nov. 6, at The Butler Institute of American Art, and run through Jan. 2.

A meet-the-artist reception will take place Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Perrott has worked as a professional photographer for the past 40 years. In addition to his commercial work, which includes portraiture and photography for annual reports, he has made photographs that document Pittsburgh’s citizens, and its rich industrial landscape.

In the early ’80s, he gave special attention to the life and death struggle of the steel industry. He used photographs from this project to create the book “Eliza.”

In 1989, Perrott published “Hope Abandoned” a four-year investigation of Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia.

His photographs are included in the permanent collections of a number of museums, including The Butler, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern

In the exhibition at The Butler, Perrott has documented mostly half-painted billboards beginning in 1975 and ending in 1990 when “vinyl wraps” began to replace them. Now pixels have mostly replaced vinyl.

The exhibition will be shown in the Beecher Center Wing’s Flad B Gallery.

“Mark Perrott is clearly a photographer’s photographer,” said Louis Zona, director and curator of The Butler. “His work reminds us that Alfred Stieglitz’s dream that the photographic image have the same power and prestige as paint on canvas has been realized. His technical ability is extraordinary and his concepts unique and imaginative.”

Playhouse Sets ‘Outside Mullingar’ Auditions

YOUNGSTOWN – Auditions for the Youngstown Playhouse’s production of “Outside Mullingar” will take place Nov. 13 and 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the theater’s Moyer Room.

Written by John Patrick Shanley, “Outside Mullingar” has been called a Valentine to the wonder and weirdness of love.

The romantic comedy tells the story of lifelong neighbors Anthony and Rosemary, a couple of introverted, middle-aged misfits. When Anthony’s father threatens to leave his Irish farm to American cousins, Rosemary jumps into the middle of a land feud and gets caught in a web of family eccentricities.

The cast requires one male and one female, ages late 30s to early 40s; and one male and one female ages 65 and up.

Auditioners should be prepared to read from the script and may be asked to use an Irish accent. Christopher Fidram is the director.

Rehearsals will begin in January and performances will take place Feb. 24-26 and March 3-5.
