The Update | Boardman High Orchestras to Perform; Jazz Concert at YSU

BOARDMAN, Ohio – The Boardman High School Classical, Symphony, Chamber and Project Mayhem orchestras will present a concert at the Boardman Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Admission is $4 ($2 for students and free for senior citizens and children under age 10).

The Classical and Chamber orchestras will open the concert. BHS senior Amie Nguyen will be the violin soloist as the Chamber Orchestra performs the theme to the film “Schindler’s List,” composed by John Williams. 

Seniors Matthew Amendol and Hannah Austin will be cello soloists in the first movement of Vivaldi’s “Concerto for Two Cellos in G Minor.” The Symphony Orchestra will close their portion of the program with a medley of “Scooby Doo,” “Ghostbusters” and “Monster Mash.”

Boardman’s electric rock orchestra, Project Mayhem, will perform a short set of rock songs. Mayhem’s performance will feature vocalists Kate Congo, Nina Hudock, Cameron Keffer, Lydia Kenney, Lucas Mitchell and Allison Young.

The Boardman Orchestra program is under the direction of Michele Prokop, Bill Amendol and Christine Carucci.

Jazz concert at YSU’s Bliss Hall

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown State University jazz studies area’s fall concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, in Ford Theater, lower level of Bliss Hall. Admission is free.

The concert will feature the YSU Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Kent J. Engelhardt. The ensemble will perform jazz standards, including “Back Bone” and “Lover Man” by Thad Jones, “Samba Con Getchu” by Bob Brookmeyer and “The Heat’s On” by Sammy Nestico. 

Highlights will include arrangements of “Upper Manhattan Medical Group” and “Georgia On My Mind” by YSU alumnus Mike Kamuf. 

Vocalist Elizabeth Jadue will accompany the ensemble in its performances of “I Ain’t Got Nobody,” “Lover Man” and “Georgia on My Mind.”

Author to Speak on ‘The Ursuline Sisters’

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Local author, artist and historian Tom Welsh will speak on his new book, “The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown: Serving the Mahoning Valley since 1874,” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, in the meeting room of Denny’s restaurant, 4020 Belmont Ave.

His program is part of the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society’s Memories of a Lifetime speaker series.

Admission is $15 ($10 for historical society members). The event will include live entertainment. Reservations are suggested; call 330 726 8277.

The Ursuline Sisters, a Roman Catholic order of religious women, are known for founding and servicing many area schools, such as Ursuline High School. With a motherhouse in Canfield, the order operates Beatitude House, the Ursuline Center, the Ursuline Mission, Ursuline Senior Living, HIV/AIDS Ministry and more. 

Welsh has co-authored three books on local and regional history, including “Strouss: Youngstown’s Dependable Store” (2012), “Classic Restaurants of Youngstown” (2014) and “A History of Jewish Youngstown and the Steel Valley” (2017). He authored “Closing Chapters: Urban Change, Religious Reform, and the Decline of Youngstown’s Catholic Elementary Schools, 1960 – 2006” (2011) and “The Life and Legacy of William M. Cafaro – A Man for All Seasons” (2022).
