BOARDMAN, Ohio — Boardman Township Park will mark its 75th year with a community Birthday Bash on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Since its founding, Boardman Park has grown to 243 acres with multiple facilities and almost year-round events.

The Birthday Bash will run from 5 to 7 p.m. and will feature live music by the bands Rock Radio and Rudy and the Professionals at the Maag Amphitheatre, a children’s zone, wagon rides, and free hot dogs and birthday cake while supplies last.

Adult Art Classes, Workshops at The Hoyt

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – Arts & Education at the Hoyt is offering classes and workshops for adults from Sept. 20 to Nov. 12.

Courses include ceramics, stained glass, plein air painting, watercolor, drawing, graphic design, photography, Italian and yoga.

There will also be one-day workshops in mosaics, fused glass, stained glass, alcohol inks, paper quilling, paper marbling, origami, and smartphone photography and editing.  Some classes, such as ceramics, stained glass and photography, permit studio use outside of class time.

Artists interested in entering the Hoyt Regional, or other upcoming juried art competitions, are encouraged to attend the Ready, Set, Show workshop on Nov. 12. It will guide participants in developing an appealing fine art portfolio by exploring tips and tricks to photograph their work. 

The young at art still have their own options to exercise their imaginations with courses in ceramics, clay animation, drawing and printmaking.  These classes are eligible for reimbursement through the PA Cyber School.

The Hoyt is also introducing a new sensory friendly workshop in mixed media for children ages 8-12 on the autism spectrum, on Oct. 13.

Scholarships are available for all ages covering between 25% and 100% of tuition and materials fees.  The application can be found at hoytartcenter.org/scholarships.

Writing Groups for Those Experiencing Grief

YOUNGSTOWN – Community Hospice and Lit Youngstown have partnered to present two six-week writing groups for those experiencing grief.

Sessions will take place on Mondays from 6-8 p.m. at the Columbiana Library, beginning Aug. 29; and Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m. at the Boardman Library, beginning Aug. 31.

Lit Youngstown is a nonprofit literary organization that engages with the community through writing, reading and storytelling.

Auditions for Stambaugh Youth Concert Band

YOUNGSTOWN – Auditions for the Stambaugh Youth Concert Band will take place from 5-9 p.m. Sept. 6 and 13 at the venue.

The band paves the way for music students to continue their music education at the collegiate level and to pursue careers in musical performance or music education.

The SYCB is under the direction of Tyler Husosky, Michael Crist and Nathan Sensabaugh and features top high school musicians from northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

It will rehearse every Tuesday evening from Sept. 20 to April 11 and will give two concerts.
