The Update | Carols & Cocoa Concert at Stambaugh; ‘White Christmas’ Film at Robins Theatre

YOUNGSTOWN – Carols & Cocoa and the Dana Holiday Concert will take place Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. at Stambaugh Auditorium.

A tradition that began 40 years ago, the evening involves music and vocal students from the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University. It begins in the Stambaugh ballroom with holiday carols and cocoa. Afterward, the action moves upstairs to the auditorium, for the holiday concert.

Tickets are $7 ($6 for seniors and students), and can be purchased in advance HERE.

The centerpiece of the concert will be John Rutter’s Gloria performed by the tutti chorus and YSU Wind Ensemble. The tutti chorus includes the Dana Chorale, Voices of YSU, and a guest community ensemble, Stambaugh Chorus.

The evening will also include holiday classic carols performed by the Dana School of Music ensembles, including the YSU Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Dana Chorale, Voices of YSU, Flute Ensemble, Dana Clarinet Ensemble, and Trombone Ensemble. This year will also feature a guest high school chamber ensemble, Jefferson Area High School Jefferson Show Stoppers. 

Robins Theatre to Screen ‘White Christmas’

WARREN, Ohio – The classic holiday film “White Christmas” will be screened at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at The Robins Theatre.

Tickets are $7 (plus applicable fees) and will go on sale on at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at the box office, 160 E. Market St., and at robinstheatre.com.

“White Christmas” (1954) features the songs of Irving Berlin, and stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney.

Columbiana Women’s Club Open House

COLUMBIANA, Ohio – The Columbiana Women’s Club civic organization, 121 N. Main St., will have an open house from 2-4 p.m. Friday.

Guests can stroll through the recently renovated century house and learn more about the club, membership and rentals. 

Individuals who become a member during the open house will entered in a drawing for a free event rental.

Lit Youngstown Reader Series Continues

YOUNGSTOWN – Writers Julie Cancio Harper and Eric Harper of Youngstown read from their works at 7 p.m.  Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Soap Gallery, 117 S. Champion St.

Admission is free and open to the public. An open mic will follow the featured readers. The reading is part of Lit Youngstown’s First Wednesday reader series.

To celebrate National Cotton Candy Day, also Dec. 7, John Slanina of the Rocky Ridge Neighborhood Association will make maple cotton candy. The maple flavor comes from syrup made with sap tapped from trees at Mill Creek Metroparks.

Eric Harper is a film and television producer.

Julie Cancio Harper writes poetry, nonfiction and the occasional screenplay.

The Jan. 4 reading will feature Debra Derrenbacher of Sharpsville and Joy Mistovich of Youngstown.
