The Update | Christmas Shows at Robins Include ‘Couples Therapy,’ Little River Band
WARREN, Ohio – The Robins Theatre has booked several holiday concerts, comedy shows and classic films in December.
Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, July 26, at robinstheatre.com and the box office, 160 E. Market St.
Here is the lineup:
- Christmas with the Celts, Dec. 3, 8 p.m., $45 to $20. Irish Christmas carols and dance with contemporary songs with Irish instrumentation.
- “Couples Therapy,” Dec. 7, 8 p.m., $35. A comedic play in which two marriage counselors who are married to each other give a presentation at a seminar. The audience becomes the seminar attendees. Includes adult content.
- Dave Koz and Friends, Dec. 11, 8 p.m. $105 to $40. This jazz-based Christmas tour is now in its 27th year.
- Dean Z: The Ultimate Elvis Christmas, Dec. 12, 8 p.m., $29 and $49.
- “O Christmas Tea: A British Comedy,” Dec. 13, 8 p.m., $64 and $29. Fans of Monty Python, Mr. Bean and Dr. Seuss will enjoy this show, which combines British propriety with a love for the unexpected.
- Little River Band, Dec. 14, 8 p.m., $85 and $35. Soft-rock band known for hits such as “Reminiscing,” “Take It Easy on Me” and “Lady.”
- “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas,” Dec. 21, 7 p.m., $7. The classic 1954 movie.
$15 Lawn Tickets for Beatles Tribute Concert
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Anyone who shows a receipt from a downtown business can purchase a lawn ticket for $15 to Thursday’s concert by Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre.
The promotion is part of the effort to support struggling downtown businesses.
Battle of the Bands to Benefit Animal Groups
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Five local bands will perform at Battle of the Bands on Saturday, July 27, at Penguin City Brewery.
All proceeds will benefit Little Black Cat Collective pet food pantry and Every Dog Matters rescue.
Admission is $10 (free for children under age 10). All ages are welcome. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with music starting at 5:30 p.m. The competing bands will be Centre Piece Band, Oh Bother, Madame Marlowe, Plinko and Negative Zen.
The winning band will take home $1,000. The event will also include a basket raffle.
The Little Black Cat of Austintown distributes food to over 250 animals per month.
Auditions for ‘The Birthday Party’ at Selah
STRUTHERS, Ohio – Auditions for Selah Dessert Theater’s production of “The Birthday Party” will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 28 and 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 29.

All roles are open. Come prepared to read from the script. Rehearsals will begin the first week of October. Performance dates are Nov. 7-9, 15-16 and 22-23.
The play, written by Nobel Prize laureate Harold Pinter, centers around Stanley, a reclusive musician who rents a room at a boarding house run by a couple. Their comfortable life is disrupted by a pair of mysterious and sinister men from Stanley’s past. Chaos and fear replace quiet routine in this tale of suspense.
Here are the cast requirements:
- Meg: A woman in her 60s, chatty, flirty, likes routine and wants to be liked.
- Petey: A man in his 60s and Meg’s husband, calm demeanor, keeps things running.
- Stanley: A man in his 30s, unkempt, enigmatic, becomes increasingly unhinged and paranoid.
- Lulu: A woman in her 20s, buxom and likes to control men.
- Goldberg: A man in his 50s, mysterious, menacing, mobster-like, charming.
- McCann: A man in his 30s, Goldberg’s right-hand man, quiet but violent and power hungry.
‘The Armed Man’ Oratorio Is Now on YouTube
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A video recording of the Stambaugh Chorus and Festival Orchestra’s April 14 performance of “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace” is now available to view on Youtube. Click HERE.
The 90-minute concert was performed at St. Joseph church in Austintown. It was written by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins and premiered in 2000 in London.
Hae-Jong Lee, director of the Stambaugh Chorus, led more than 90 voices in the concert, which also included the Dana Chorale and Thiel College Choir. Voices of YSU, Franklin (Pa.) High School Choir and the Canfield Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir contributed.
Todd Maki handled the audio recording, and Tom Walker handled the video recording.
Time stamps have been added to each song, allowing viewers to navigate to their favorite parts.
The April 14 performance was presented as Stambaugh Chorus’ annual Peace Concert and raised money for charity.
“The Armed Man” is an oratorio that uses the structure and melodies of a traditional catholic Mass. It also borrows from other religious and historical sources, including poems from India and Japan and a Muslim prayer. It is divided into 13 movements, which run through the stages of conflict.
Rotary Clubs Mixer at Penguin City
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Rotary clubs of Austintown, Boardman, Brookfield, Canfield, Liberty-Girard, Struthers, Warren and Youngstown invite Rotarians, prospective members and supporters to attend the Rotary Night Out multiclub mixer from 5:30- 7:30 p.m. today at Penguin City Brewing, downtown.
Guests can learn about each club’s activities in support of Rotary International’s motto of Service Above Self. Admission is free. A cash bar will be open, and the clubs will provide snacks and giveaways.
A basket raffle will help the residents and businesses that were impacted by the explosion at the Realty Tower on May 28.
“Several of the incoming presidents of area Rotary clubs had been talking … about finding ways to collaborate and decided to begin our year with the multiclub mixer,” said George Nelson, president of the Rotary Club of Youngstown.
Boardwalk Nights at Cedar Point
SANDUSKY, Ohio – When the sun goes down at Cedar Point, excitement heats up at the new Boardwalk Nights event.
The Boardwalk and beach come alive with a variety of musical acts, stunts, games, dancing, food and more. Boardwalk Nights take place every night through Aug. 18, excluding Tuesdays, starting at 7 p.m.
The evening begins with a parade featuring floats and characters. There are also daredevils, high divers, fire manipulators and other acts.
Fair food, interactive games, colored lights and a finale of fireworks complete the event. Cocktails and nonalcoholic drinks are available.

Korean Players Added to Scrappers Roster
NILES, Ohio – Two Korean Baseball Organization players have been added to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ second half roster.
Sungkyung Kim, a pitcher, and Changyong Lee, an infielder, both previously played for the Samsung Lions of the KBO.
This is the first time in MLB Draft League history that both leagues have partnered for such an opportunity.
