The Update | Classical Guitar Concert at YSU; Bull Riders, Sesame Street Coming to Valley

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Dana School of Music will present an evening of classical guitar by renowned musicians Christopher Mrofchak and François Fowler at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in Bliss Recital Hall, lower level of Bliss Hall, on the Youngstown State University campus.

The concert is free to the public.

Mrofchak, an American classical guitarist and educator based in Tallahassee, Fla., is the director of the guitar program at Wakulla High School and maintains a teaching studio at the Timberlane Arts and Dance Academy.

Fowler is a faculty member at the Dana School of Music at YSU. He has earned many national and international awards and has performed in venues across North America.

Fowler’s latest album, “Sonata,” features music by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach, Agustin Barrios, Gregorio Huet and Domenico Scarlatti.

He is a founding member of both the Duo Allant with flutist Kathryn Thomas Umble and the Fowler & Mrofchak guitar duo with Mrofchak.

Bull Riders Tour Returning to Covelli

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Professional Bull Riders Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour will come to Covelli Centre for shows on Feb. 7-8.

The bull riders have become a winter staple at the arena. Tickets for the upcoming shows will range from $106 to $23 and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at Ticketmaster.com (fees apply) and the box office.

Sesame Street Live! Coming to Packard Hall

WARREN, Ohio – Sesame Street Live! will bring its Say Hello tour to Packard Music Hall on March 11.

Tickets range from $59.75 to $29.75 and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Ticketmaster.com (fees apply) and the box office. An online-only presale will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday; use the password PACKARD.

Journey Tribute Band Coming to Robins

WARREN, Ohio – E5C4P3: The Journey Tribute will return to the Robins Theatre at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4.

Tickets range from $15 to $35 (plus applicable fees) and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at RobinsTheatre.com and at the box office, 160 E. Market St.

A presale will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday for members of Friends of the Robins Theatre. For details, check the website.

Roman Rudnytsky Piano Concert

BOARDMAN, Ohio – The McGuffey Historical Society will resume its series of Music in the Afternoon recitals on Sunday, Oct. 13, when it presents a 3 p.m. performance by Roman Rudnytsky at the Ursuline Center auditorium, 4280 Shields Road.

Rudnytsky, a music professor emeritus at Youngstown State University, will perform on a Steinway grand piano, accompanied by Michael Nichols, winner of the YSU Dana School of Music Young Artist Competition, and pianists Diane Yazvac and Ash Haughey.

A goodwill offering of $15 ($10 for society members) will be accepted at the door. Rudnytsky will have an assortment of DVDs for sale, which he will sign upon request.

Rudnytsky is a concert pianist of Ukrainian background. Born in New York and trained at Julliard School, he has been playing concerts around the world for years. He is a recipient of YSU’s Distinguished Professor Award.

Nichols is a graduate of Chaney VPA School, Youngstown, and a keyboard performance major at the Dana School of Music. He has studied with Caroline Oltmanns and the late Sean Baran at YSU.

Friendly Squares Sets Monthly Polka Dance

NILES, Ohio – The Friendly Squares’ monthly square dance will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Niles Scope Center, 14 E. State St.

Neil Harnar will be the caller. The theme for the dance is Halloween. Costumes are encouraged, and cider and donuts will be served. Admission is $7 at the door.
