The Update | Clothing Swap at Penguin City; Art Show and Sale at Davis YMCA

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The annual Swap-A-Palooza clothing swap event will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at Penguin City Brewery, downtown. Admission is free.

The event, sponsored by The Neighborhood social organization, promotes sustainability by extending the life of clothing and reducing waste in northeastern Ohio.

Free to enter and open to the public, the swap meet offers something for everyone and in all sizes. It will include a few vintage vendors selling pre-owned collectable pieces.

All leftover clothing items will be donated to the Warren Family Mission.

Those who want to swap clothing are asked to drop off their clothes at Penguin City after 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.

“On average, clothing items are only worn seven times before being discarded,” said Alison Green of The Neighborhood. “Our Swap-A-Palooza is a fun, community-centric way to keep perfectly good clothing out of the landfill while giving attendees an option to clean out their closet and find new items for free.”

The But I Know What I Like art show and sale will take place at the Davis Family YMCA in Boardman.

Photo Exhibition by Richard Hahn at The Butler

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – An exhibition by Mahoning Valley native and photographer Richard Hahn will open Sunday, Oct. 6, at The Butler Institute of American Art and run through Nov. 24.

“Richard Hahn: Facades” will begin with an artist’s reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

“Round Back” by Richard Hahn.

The exhibition is an exploration that reaches beyond the character of a structure as established by its designer’s original intentions.

“My intent is to reveal each subject’s personality as defined by its surroundings,” Hahn said. “Its reaction to weather and sunlight, its modern-day role as a ‘canvas’ for street artists or a billboard shouting the brand of its tenant.”

Hahn grew up in Youngstown and attended Ursuline High School and Youngstown State University. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, he worked with rhythm and blues bands both as a trumpet player and arranger. In the early 1980s he traveled extensively with his first professional camera, honing his photographic skills taking publicity shots and portraits of the bands and musicians he met. Later, as founder of the public relations firm Keynote Media Group, photography became an essential component of the business.

Today, Hahn remains active as a marketing consultant, corporate film producer and freelance photographer.
