The Update | Dana Ensemble in Free Concert; Boardman History Lecture

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Dana Ensemble of Youngstown State University will give a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at the Butler Institute of American Art North Annex.

The program will feature Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in G Major, conducted by Michael Butler and with vocalist Misook Yun.

Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 creates musical imagery depicting childhood.  

Author to Speak on Boardman History

BOARDMAN TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Local author Dick Lalumia, who co-wrote “That’s the Way It Was – Historical Highlights of Boardman Township” with John Moore (1976), will  speak on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 9 a.m. at Boardman Park’s Lariccia Center Stambaugh Room.

The event is sponsored by the Boardman Historical Society.

Lalumia’s book is a history of the township, from the 1870s to the 1970s and includes historic photographs of people, places and buildings.

LaLumia is a 1957 graduate of Boardman High School, where he was a standout athlete. He became a teacher at Boardman Middle School.

His lecture begins the society’s annual membership drive and is free to the public.

Square Dancing Club to Celebrate

 NILES, Ohio – The Niles Friendly Squares will celebrate their 12th anniversary a square dance on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, 14 E. State St. Dress is casual. Admission is $6. Gene Hammond and Neil Harner will be the callers.

 A new session of weekly square dance lessons will begin Sept. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. Each lesson builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with review and practice. The Tuesday evening sessions will run for 12 weeks at the Niles SCOPE Center. There is a fee of $6 per person per lesson.

‘Basics of Theater’ Class at the JCC

YOUNGSTOWN — The Jewish Community Center School of Theatre will offer a “Basics of Theater” workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 14 to Oct. 26 at the JCC, 505 Gypsy Lane.
This introductory level class for ages 10 to 17 will cover everything needed to get involved in theater. Participants will practice important skills such as building stage presence, finding and performing monologues, and preparing for auditions.

Registration is required by Sept. 9. The cost is $75 for JCC members and $100 for nonmembers. Go to jccyoungstown.org to register. There will be no class Oct. 5.
