The Update | Fireworks Fest Ready to Light Fuse; Rock ‘N Hop Event at Modern Methods

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – The 2024 New Castle Fireworks Fest will take place Saturday,

July 22, from 4-10 p.m. along South Mercer and East Washington streets, downtown.

The festival will feature food and drink options, food trucks, live music, and a spectacular firework display by Pyrotecnico.

Attendees are encouraged to park in the city parking garage on Mercer Street or at any of the free lots around town. The fireworks display will take place at 10 p.m. from a location near the southwest bend of the Columbus Interbelt behind the Cascade Galleria.

The focal point for most of the night will be the the main stage on the corner of South Mercer S and East Washington streets.

The area along South Mercer from East Washington to Neshannock Creek Brewery will serve as the designated area for alcoholic beverages. The area will host four New Castle businesses as well as a game area and tables for gathering. Guests can also bring lawn chairs for the fireworks.

Live music will be provided from 5-10 p.m. by by Grandview Soul (Motown) and Kut Loose (’90s and ’00s rock).

In 1922, Constantino Vitale immigrated to New Castle from Italy and began creating fireworks displays as a business. New Castle is now known as the fireworks capital of the United States.

Fundraiser to Help Families Affected by Cancer

WARREN, Ohio – Rock ‘N Hop, a live music fundraiser to aid local families impacted by cancer, will take place Saturday, July 20, from 4-10 p.m. at Modern Methods Brewing.

The event, sponsored by Modern Methods and Rock4Reason, will feature Amanda Beagle Voice Studio (4-5 p.m.), Brian Angelo, (5:30-7:30 p.m.), and French Blue plus 2, (8-10 p.m.)

The event is free to enter. Rock4Reason is selling a fundraiser tasting ticket for $10, which includes three “brewer’s choice” tastings. These tickets can be purchased at the door or at rock4reason.org.

Last year, Rock4Reason raised more than $36,000 and helped 109 local patients and families undergoing treatment for cancer and other illnesses.

Rock4Reason will partner with Modern Methods again on Tuesday, Aug. 6, for Tips for a Cause. The event will take place at Modern Method’s sister space, The Darlene Lounge, 145 W. Market St., downtown.

Lecture on Gilded Age Homes of Sharon, Pa.

YOUNGSTOWN – The city of Sharon, Pa., experienced rapid growth in the 19th and 20th centuries because of its booming coal, iron, and steel industry, and the leaders of these corporations accumulated great personal wealth

As a result, these prominent residents built grand homes in a variety of popular or peculiar architectural styles in the city from the 1850s through 1915.

 Taylor Galaska, Sharon Historical Society president, will discuss these homes in a free presentation titled “Grand Homes of the Gilded Age of Sharon, Pa.” at noon, Thursday, July 18, at the Tyler History Center in downtown Youngstown.

Art Exhibition to Open at Trumbull Gallery

WARREN, Ohio – The 58th Trumbull Art Gallery-Random Acts of Artists juried exhibition will open Saturday, July 13, with a reception from 6-8 p.m., at Trumbull Art Gallery, 180 N. Park Ave.

Hands-on-History Series to Continue

YOUNGSTOWN – Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s Hands-on-History Wednesdays series will continue on July 17, with a program from 1-3 p.m. at Tyler History Center.

The program will explore historic places around the Mahoning Valley.  Participants can become a Good Humor ice cream maker at Burt’s, paint a masterpiece in honor of the Butler Institute of American Art, craft leaf prints in honor of Mill Creek Park.

Then, on July 24, the final program of the summer will take place from 1-3 p.m. at the Arms Family Museum.  

Admission is free and all ages are welcome.
