The Update | Freshman Art Show at YSU; Comedy Show Sets Covelli Record

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The art department at Youngstown State University will present its freshman portfolio review showcase from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, on the fourth floor of Bliss Hall.

Also that day, guest artist Erin Mallea will be on campus for a studio visit and lecture. Mallea is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores microcosms as entry points into larger human and environmental conditions.

She will be in the McDonough Museum of Art from 1 to 3:30 p.m. for studio visits. Her lecture will be at 5:30 p.m. in the museum’s lecture hall.

The week will conclude with the opening and reception of the Fall 2024 Graduating B.F.A. Exhibition on Friday, Nov. 22, in the McDonough. An opening reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. that day. The exhibition will run through Dec. 14.

Entry to all three events is free and open to the public.

The McDonough Museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Show Sets Covelli Attendance Record for Comedy

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Thursday’s performance by Sebastian Maniscalco set the attendance record for a comedy show at Covelli Centre.

The sold-out show attracted about 7,300 people to the downtown arena. The show was in the round, meaning all seats were sold, even those behind the small stage.

Maniscalco’s visit to Youngstown was part of his “It Ain’t Right” tour of North American cities.

Discounts on Museum Store Day at The Butler

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Butler Institute of American Art will participate in National Museum Store Day from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1.

The store will offer a 10% discount that day, and a gift for purchases over $15.

Alice Crosetto, author of “The Cookie Table, A Steel Valley Tradition,” will speak in the Zona Auditorium at 1 p.m. She will sell and sign copies of the book afterward.

Youngstown Marathon Foundation Donations

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown Marathon has donated $6,500 to each of its 2024 beneficiaries: Diva Donations, Project MKC and Youngstown Blue Coats.

It was the largest amount the foundation has disbursed since its founding in 2017.

Local nonprofit organizations submit applications each year, and the foundation board chooses its beneficiaries based on community outreach and impact.

Students Showcase Artwork Through Town

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Students from Westminster College and Wilmington Area School District are showcasing their artistic talents in the annual exhibition Environmental Art in the Community, running through Dec. 5.

A Community Art Walk is set for Saturday, Nov. 23.

The exhibition, hosted across 19 locations in New Wilmington, invites residents and visitors to explore the intersection of art and environmental awareness through student works that highlight sustainability, nature and personal and community reflections. A variety of art such as photo essays, creative writing, mixed media, watercolors, sculptures and 3D printing works are on display.

As part of this year’s exhibition, a unique and interactive scavenger hunt – Find the Geckos – adds an element of fun for visitors.

A total of 70 colorful geckos, handmade by local fourth graders, are on display throughout the community, and one or more can be found at each exhibition stop marked with the gecko symbol. Among the geckos is a special surprise – a Where’s Waldo gecko, hiding somewhere in the exhibit.

To participate in this challenge, visitors are encouraged to find the Where’s Waldo gecko, take a selfie with it and email the photo to [email protected] for a chance to win a gift card to a local business.

The Environmental Art in the Community exhibition is open for self-guided tours during business hours at each of the 19 participating locations. Visitors can explore the artwork at their own pace and interact with pieces that speak to them, while also keeping an eye out for the hidden geckos.

On Saturday, Nov. 23, the community is invited to join an Art Walk, starting at 11 a.m. at Stop #1, the Cultural Center at McKelvey Campus Center. The walk will guide participants through the exhibition, stopping at each of the 19 locations.

The walk will conclude at Stop #19: Shenango on the Green, where a reception with refreshments will be held around noon. This reception will be an opportunity to meet some student artists and celebrate the exhibition.

Fourth Graders Can Get Free Museum Admission

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mahoning Valley Historical Society is now part of the Ohio 4th Grade History Pass.

The pass provides every fourth grader in the state with free admission with a paid adult.

The program and passes may not be used for group visit admission (other restrictions may apply). 

Families of a current fourth grade student can download a pass HERE. Show the pass on a phone or a printed copy to receive one free admission for the fourth grade student.

The pass will be valid through Aug. 31 at both Arms Family Museum and Tyler History Center.  

Lecture on Youngstown History at the Tyler

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Jessica Trickett, collections curator of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, will give a presentation on the history of the area in the 1880s and 1890s at noon Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., downtown.

The event is part of the MVHS’ Bites and Bits of History speaker series. Admission is free, and guests can bring a lunch.
