Pernotto Art Show at Tyler History Center
YOUNGSTOWN – “Brier Hill Works: Art and Artifacts from Jim Pernotto” opened this weekend in the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St., downtown.
The exhibition spotlights the work of Pernotto, of Youngstown. Pernotto grew up on the south side before leaving to pursue an art career.
When he returned in 1979, two years after the steel mills closed, he found a changed landscape that came to inform and influence his artwork.
“Areas like the Jeanette blast furnace at Brier Hill were abandoned and the sites were left virtually open and able to be explored,” Pernotto said. “I went down there with my van and did drawings for several summers and began to reclaim some of the objects that were left behind.”
Pernotto recently donated to the Mahoning Valley Historical Society his collection of steel workers’ tools and equipment salvaged from Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company’s Brier Hill Works.
The Brier Hill plant produced iron and steel from 1859 to 1979.
Pernotto’s exhibition at The Tyler includes artifacts from the mill along with the artwork it inspired. It will run through March 31.
