The Update | Hoyt Art Show Winners; Circus Show Coming to Robins

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – Arts & Education at the Hoyt has revealed the winners of its annual Regional Juried Art Competition. 

Of the 429 entries submitted from a 250-mile radius of the museum, juror Juana Williams chose 70 works for the show, which is now on display in the Main Galleries through July 25.

Williams is the associate curator of African American Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts. 

Here are the winners:

  • First Place: “Commuter Parking, Amsterdam” by Joseph Ryznar of Lower Burrell, Pa.
  • Second Place: “B235” by George Radeschi of Bedford, Pa.
  • Third Place: “Behind the Mask” by Michael W High of Chardon, Ohio.

Five artists received merit awards: 

  • “Ristorante DeNiro on the Water of Leith, UK,” by Michael Cantelmo of Warren, Ohio.
  • “I Need Ammunition, Not a Ride” by John Elais of Youngstown, Ohio. 
  • “Confluence: Living in the Shadow of the Giants” by Renee Keil of Pittsburgh, Pa.
  • “Sitka Alaska” by Maria Deely of Morgantown, W.Va.
  • “Up Close” by Lisa Curry of Brookfield, Ohio.

Also being recognized in the Blair Sculpture Walkway Gallery is last year’s Regional solo exhibition winner, Gwen Waight.

A public awards ceremony and reception will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15. Admission is free.

The Great Dubois Coming to Robins Theatre

WARREN, Ohio – The Great Dubois, Masters of Variety, a two-person circus show, will come to the Robins Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17. Tickets are $25 and $35 (plus applicable fees).

The theater will also screen the film “The Greatest Showman” (2017) that day at 3 p.m. Tickets to the film are $99 and $78, which include four tickets to both shows.

Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, June 14, at robinstheatre.com and at the box office, 160 E. Market St.

The Great Dubois is a fast-paced circus show that includes juggling, hula hoops, unicycle, aerial, circus stunts, contortion, magic and audience interaction.

Dad Joke Showdown at Sweet Memories

LIBERTY, Ohio – This Father’s Day weekend, Sweet Memories Vintage Tees & Candy, 1282 Trumbull Ave., will present Root Beer Bonanza on June 15 and 16.

Guests can sample root beer from the fountain. There will also be a “Dad Joke Showdown.” Participants can share their best dad jokes at the microphone, with prizes going to the winners. The showdown will take place from 1 to 3 p.m.

Admission is free. Guests are encouraged to wear their best “Dad” outfit.

Artwork Auction at Smarts Fundraiser

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Students Motivated by the Arts will present The Joy of Smarts from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, at its headquarters in the Ohio One Building, 25 E. Boardman St., downtown.

A VIP preview party for sponsors, contributing artists and those who purchase VIP tickets will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased HERE or at Smarts during regular business hours. For information, call 330 574 2787.

Guests can bid on their favorite works from local and regional artists, hear live acoustic music by local band Black Wolf & the Thief, watch a demonstration of multimedia artmaking by teaching artist Mia Mondora, enjoy appetizers by chef Christopher Bonacci. There will also be a cash bar featuring Modern Methods Brewing Co., wine and signature cocktails.
