The Update | ‘It Shoulda Been You,’ ‘Something Rotten’ at Theaters; Dance Classes at JCC

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Millennial Theatre Company will open a two-weekend run of “It Shoulda Been You” at the Hopewell Theatre, 702 Mahoning Ave., this weekend.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 19-20, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21. Curtain times are the same for April 26-28.

The production was a long time in the making for MTC, according to director Joe Asente.

“This was actually the show that we were supposed to do for our very first production back in 2016,” he said. “We announced and held auditions, and a delay from the licensing company forced us to switch gears and produce ‘Heathers’ instead. We have had a few false starts on this show over the years. For one reason or another, things never quite lined up correctly. It may have taken eight years to get here, but I am confident that this is the time and the cast that we were always meant to have.”

Though it’s a lesser-known title, Asente believes Youngstown audiences will love the show.

“This show has everything you could want packed into a 90-minute run time,” he said. “It can make you laugh until you cry and then turn around and hit you with something that will make you feel things in ways you did not expect.”

The show is a musical comedy about a wedding-gone-wrong. The bride is Jewish; the groom is Catholic; and their mothers are strong personalities. When the bride’s ex-boyfriend crashes the party, the perfect wedding starts to unravel.

The cast includes Maureen Collins, Colleen Chance, Natalina Kazimir, Edward Bazzell, Nate Beagle, Terry Shears, Roz Blystone, Andy Scott, Sierra Ellis, Ty Hanes, Ben Doss, PK Lankford, Hannah Sinclair and Adam Dominick. Tyler Stouffer is musical director, and Danielle Mentzer is choreographer.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at millennialtheatre.org.
