The Update | Lou Gramm Coming to Robins Theatre

WARREN, Ohio – Lou Gramm, the original lead singer of Foreigner, will come to the Robins Theatre on Saturday, Nov. 30, for an 8 p.m. concert.

Tickets range from $85 to $40 (plus applicable fees) and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at robinstheatre.com and the box office, 160 E. Market St. A presale for members of Friends of the Robins Theatre will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Gramm was one of the most successful rock vocalists of the late 1970s and 1980s. He was the lead vocalist on all of Foreigner’s hit songs, including “Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold as Ice,” “Long, Long Way from Home,” “Hot Blooded,” “Double Vision,” “Blue Morning, Blue Day,” “Head Games,” “Dirty White Boy,” “Urgent,” “Juke Box Hero,” “Break It Up” and “Say You Will.” 

He co-wrote most of the songs for the band, which achieved two of its biggest hits with the ballads “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” which spent 10 weeks at No. 2 on the Hot 100 chart in 1981-82, and “I Want to Know What Love Is,” which was No. 1 in 1985.

In 1987, Gramm released his first solo album, “Ready or Not,” which featured the hit “Midnight Blue.”

Dana School of Music Student Wins Gold Medal

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Ryan Lamb, a student in Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music, won the gold medal at the highly competitive Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival. 

The event, which attracts the finest brass musicians from around the globe, took place from Aug. 9-12 at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Mich.

Ryan, a second-year student pursuing a degree in Music Performance, competed against an elite field of musicians in the festival’s euphonium division.

“This award is a testament to Ryan’s exceptional musicianship, hard work and dedication to his craft,” said Joe Carucci, director of YSU’s Dana School of Music.

Jewish Artist’s Works will be Showcased

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown will welcome its first Jewish artist in residence this week. 

The work of Caryn Frishman will be showcased in the Thomases Family Endowment of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation Art Gallery through Sept. 30.

A reception will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at the JCC, 505 Gypsy Lane. During the reception, the community is invited to participate in painting a 5-foot dove.

Frishman will work with various local groups to create art in a similar style to her own.

The show, “Prideful,” includes many pieces with a Judaic theme and approach. The Florida-based Frishman’s art has a bright, cheery and inspirational style.

Presentation on Jews and Comic Books

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Professor Samantha Baskind will present “Up, Up, and Oy Vey!: Jews, Comics and the Graphic Novel” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane.

Baskind will discuss the Jewish contribution to comics and the graphic novel in her presentation, which is part of the J. Newman Levy Speaker Series.

Beginning in the 1930s, Jews built the comic book industry from the ground up, and the influence of Jewish writers, artists and editors continues to be felt to this day. Among the superheroes with “Jewish” origins are Superman, “The Thing” from The Fantastic Four and some of the X-Men characters.

Playwriting Workshops at the Playhouse

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown Playhouse will offer a series of playwriting and acting workshops that will lead up to its first Juneteenth Festival of New Works on June 19. 

This initiative, coordinated by Lundeana M. Thomas, Playhouse board member, will take place at the Playhouse, 600 Playhouse Lane, and at the McGuffey Center, 1649 Jacobs Road, this fall.

Thomas taught theater at the University of Louisville for 18 years and was the director of the African American theater program there.

All workshops are free. Here are the workshops:

  • Playwriting workshops: Sept. 9-21 (after school), led by Joyce Sylvester, actress, director and playwright.
  • Audition workshops: Oct. 5, 12 and 19, taught by Robert Greene, an off-Broadway actor known for his recurring role as Mandela.
  • Acting workshop: “Thriving as a Performer,” presented by Shirley Faison, a New York agent. This workshop will guide actors on building careers and using the internet for auditions.

The playwriting workshops will culminate in a contest with monetary awards in February, with winning entries receiving staged readings at the Juneteenth Festival of New Works in 2025.
