The Update | ‘Mary Poppins’ at Salem Theater; St. Pat’s Party on West Side

SALEM, Ohio – The Salem Community Theatre will present “Mary Poppins, the Musical” from March 21-24.

Curtain time is 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance at salemcommunitytheatre.org.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration on West Side

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Mahoning Avenue St. Patrick’s Day neighborhood celebration will take place Saturday, March 16, in the lot behind Trek Coffee House, 1588 Mahoning Ave., from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The event will include free parking and admission, live music by The Cugines from 5 to 9 p.m. and food from Casa Ramirez and Trek.

Youngstown Symphony Auditions

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra will hold auditions for section violin and viola players Monday, April 29, and principal and section cello players Tuesday, April 30.

Auditions will be at the DeYor Performing Arts Center. Qualified applicants should register at younsgtownsymphony.com before April 15. Questions can be emailed to [email protected].

The YSO is a per-service ensemble with a season consisting of approximately 25 regular services and varying educational and outreach services.

Principal musicians are paid $133.40 per service; section musicians are paid $116 per service. Cartage and doubling is added when applicable.

Applicants are required by federal law to provide proof of eligibility of employment if offered a position.

The orchestra’s members are represented under a collective bargaining agreement with Local 86-242 of the American Federation of Musicians.

Lawrence County Burger Trail Is Back

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – The Lawrence County Burger Trail will return with 19 local restaurants. 

Participants can choose from over 100 unique burgers and win prizes along the way. Digital passports can be downloaded HERE.

Liberian Poet Laureate at PSU Shenango

SHARON, Pa. – Patricia Jabbeh Wesley, the inaugural poet laureate of the Republic of Liberia and professor of English at Penn State Altoona, will give a poetry reading at Penn State Shenango at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in Room 223 of the classroom building, 147 Shenango Ave. 

Admission is free and open to the public.

Wesley immigrated to the United States with her family during the 14-year Liberian civil war, an experience that shaped her writing. She explores themes associated with the African Diaspora, such as the plight of the refugee of war, African femininity, motherhood, home, displacement and the survivor as witness.

She is the author of six critically acclaimed books of poetry, including “Praise Song for My Children: New and Selected Poems,” “When the Wanderers Come Home,” “Where the Road Turns,” “The River is Rising” and “Becoming Ebony.” 

Wesley was also the editor of “Breaking the Silence: Anthology of Liberian Poetry.”

Hiram College Library’s Annual Book Sale

HIRAM, Ohio – The 2024 Friends of the Hiram College Library book sale will take place Thursday, March 21, through Monday, March 25, in the Pritchard Room of the library, 11694 Hayden St.  

Hours are:

  • March 21: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.  
  • March 22: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  
  • March 23: noon to 4 p.m.  
  • March 24: 2 to 7 p.m.  
  • March 25: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

The sale includes a selection of nonfiction, fiction, biographies, CDs, DVDs and more. Hardback books, DVDs and CDs are $1, and paperback books are 50 cents. March 24 and 25 will be Bag Days. Visitors can fill a provided bag for $5 on March 24 and $1 on March 25.

Rita’s to Give Away Italian Ice on Tuesday

Rita’s Italian Ice and Frozen Custard will celebrate spring on Tuesday, March 19, by giving away a 6-ounce Italian Ice to all customers in any flavor.
