The Update | Mickey Dolenz Returning to Robins; History of Local Nightlife

WARREN, Ohio – Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees will return to the Robins Theatre on Tuesday, Oct.15, for an 8 p.m. performance that will include songs and stories of his career.

Tickets range from $78 to $38 (plus applicable fees) and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at robinstheatre.com and the box office, 160 E. Market St.

Dolenz is an actor, singer, director, producer, writer, radio DJ, inventor and all-around performer. Best known for his stint as a vocalist and drummer of the 1960s pop legend The Monkees, he last appeared at the Robins in April 2023.

Program to Look at History of Valley Nightlife

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The history of nightlife in the Mahoning Valley will be the topic of a program on Thursday, Aug. 22, at Cedars West End, 706 Steel St., from 6 to 8 p.m.

The event is part of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s History on Tap series. Admission is $35, and reservations must be made in advance at mahoninghistory.org.

Participants must be at least 21 years old. The event will include a taco bar with toppings, chips and salsa and dessert. 

Speakers will include Tom Welsh on the history of local restaurants, Sean Posey on local cinema and Molly Galano on live theater. There will also be local trivia and prizes.

Auditions for Millennial Theatre’s ‘Hair’

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Auditions for Millennial Theatre Company’s production of “Hair: The American Tribal Rock Musical” will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, and noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Hopewell Theatre, 702 Mahoning Ave.

Auditionees should prepare a 30- to 60-second cut of a song in the style of the show. An accompanist will be provided. Director Joe Asente is seeking a diverse cast of actors age 17 and up. All roles are open. Be prepared to do a cold reading. Headshot and résumé are encouraged but not required.

The music director is Ryan Lamb, and the choreographer is Danielle Mentzer.

The musical will be performed Oct. 18-20, 25-27 and Nov. 1-3 at Hopewell Theatre. Rehearsals will run four days a week from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at Hopewell Theatre. For information, go to millennialtheatre.org or email [email protected].

Summer Camp for Children at JCC

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, is offering an end of summer camp for students in kindergarten through fifth grade from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 19-30, and Sept. 3.

The camp will feature arts and crafts, science experiments, swimming, recreational activities and more. A field trip is planned for the week of Aug. 19. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided, but students must bring a packed lunch.

Writers Group to Meet at Book Store

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at Leana’s Books & More, 4317 Kirk Road. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend.

Led by author Nancy Christie, the meetings offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on works-in-progress.

Lecture on Harriet Taylor Upton, Museum

LIBERTY, Ohio – Ken Conklin, curator of Upton House Museum in Warren, will speak about the museum and its famous former occupant, Harriet Taylor Upton, at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at the Denny’s Restaurant meeting room, 4020 Belmont Ave.

His program is part of the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society’s Memories of a Lifetime series.

Upton was a leader in the National American Woman Suffrage Association. She conducted business from her Warren mansion and entertained many celebrities from its parlor.

The Upton House Museum opened in 1989. The home was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1992. Located at 380 Mahoning Ave. NW, it is open to the public and available for rental.

Conklin is a former vice president of the Second National Bank of Warren and plays the piano at Howland Methodist Church, where he is an active member. He is president of the Upton Association.

Scrappers to Change Name for One Game

NILES, Ohio – The Mahoning Valley Scrappers will change their name to the Mahoning Valley Power Goblins for one game only Aug. 15, presented by Ultium Cells.

The team will wear special Korean Baseball Organization-inspired jerseys with Power Goblins spelled out in Korean. The hats will feature a power goblin. The jerseys will be auctioned off at the game and on livesource.com, with proceeds benefiting the Warren Family Mission. Hats and T-shirts will be available for purchase at the Team Shop at Eastwood Field.

General admission tickets will be $1. Hot dogs and 12-ounce soft drinks will be $1, and domestic beers will be $2.

The Penguin City Bullpen Bar & Grille will open at 5 p.m. The Vegas Band will perform in the picnic garden from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

‘Willy Wonka’ Film Screening at Firestone Farms

COLUMBIANA, Ohio – The film “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” will be screened at 1 and 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at Firestone Farms Town Centre. Admission is free.

The children’s television characters Bluey and Bingo will visit from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Children can get their photo taken with them for a $5 donation, with proceeds benefiting the Columbiana Project playground that is proposed for Firestone Park.
