The Update | Mural Ideas on Display; Symphony in Concert; Pinball Fest at MetroPlex
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – An exhibition of murals and site-specific art created by students at Youngstown State University will open April 11 in Solomon Gallery and run through April 22.
The gallery, in Bliss Hall, is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Twenty posters featuring the design ideas from students (some now alumni) in Professor Dragana Crnjak’s Mural and Site-Specific Painting classes from Fall 2020 and 2021 will be on display. The posters feature hypothetical proposals that students developed based on their individual site choices.
“While our hope is to have more of the proposed ideas realized, the main objective of the exhibition is to share the exciting range of students’ ideas for public art that can play a crucial role in visually transforming and enriching the city of Youngstown,” said Crnjak.
YSO in Concert at Ford Family Recital Hall
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra will present a concert of brass and percussion in the Ford Family Recital Hall at the DeYor Performing Arts Center at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 10.
The program will feature Fanfare for the Common Man by Copland, Symphony for Brass and Timpani by Haufrecht, Irish Tune from County Derry by Grainger and Allen, and more.

Pinball and Craft Beer Festival
LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio – The second annual PinBrew, a pinball and local craft beer festival, will take place Thursday through Saturday, April 7-9, the Metroplex Expo Center on Belmont Avenue.
The family-friendly event will feature over 100 pinball machines and arcade games free to play with paid entry as well as local food vendors and offerings from six local microbreweries. Proceeds from the sale of beer will be donated to Project MKC. Tickets are available online at PinBrewFest.com or at the door.
Project MKC serves 10 area counties with programs that include Best Foot Forward, an initiative to distribute new boots to children, as well as Hope Totes, which provides packages to children undergoing chemotherapy at Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Valley.
The first coin-operated pinball machine, “Whiffle,” was designed and created by Youngstown’s Arthur Paulin and Automatic Industries Inc. in the 1930s.
Mimi Fox in Concert at Bliss Hall
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Internationally renowned guitarist, composer and recording artist Mimi Fox will give a masterclass on Friday, April 8, 12:30-3 p.m. in Bliss Hall, room 2222, on the Youngstown State University campus. The event, presented by the Dana School of Music, is free and open to the public.
Fox has been named a winner in six consecutive DownBeat Magazine international critic’s polls and has been recognized by writers and colleagues alike as one of the most eloquent guitarists on today’s scene.
Auditions Set for ‘Little Mermaid Jr.’
SALEM, Ohio – Auditions for Salem Community Theatre ‘s production of “The Little Mermaid Jr.,” a youth production directed by Justin Steele , will take place June 5 from 4 to 6 p.m., and June 6 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The show will be performed Aug. 4-7.
The director is looking for a large cast of actors ages ranging from second grade to senior in high school.
Auditionees will need to have a one-minute section of a song prepared. No accompanist will be provided. Those auditionees can sing a cappella or with a phone or CD without voices, and will also be asked to read from the script.
Davis Family YMCA Seeks Paintings
BOARDMAN, Ohio – The Davis Family YMCA, 45 McClurg Road, will have an open house on Sunday, April 10, from 1- to 2:30 p.m., to kick off its fundraiser, Sunflowers for Ukraine. More than four dozen paintings and photographs, donated by area artists, will be for sale to raise money for YMCA Ukraine.
Art donations, labeled with name and title on the back, may be dropped off at the Davis Y at any time before or after April 10. The public is invited to purchase art at any time during regular Y hours.
Steranko Fan Session at Hotel
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A fan session with pop art creator and illustrator Jim Steranko will begin at 8:30 p.m. April 9 at The Doubletree Hotel, downtown.
Admission is free. Steranko will sell and sign memorabilia. An exhibition of paintings by the artist is currently on view at The Butler Institute of American Art.
Steranko will be present at a reception at the museum at 6 p.m. April 9. Tickets are available at Butlerart.com.
