The Update | Museum Group Honors The Butler’s Mistovich; Civil War Reenactment
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Joy Mistovich, education assistant and accessibility specialist for The Butler Institute of American Art, has been named the 2023 emerging museum professional of the year by the Ohio Museums Association.
The award recognizes exceptional promise and potential for museum professionals with less than 10 years in the field.
Johnna McEntee, executive director of the Ohio Museums Association, praised Mistovich for her
dedication, passion for museum and education work and commitment to service.
The award honors “the impact and change [Mistovich] has affected during her short time in the field to provide a more inclusive and accessible museum experience for all,” McEntee said.
In 2022, Mistovich introduced the Aira app to The Butler, making it the first museum in the region to sign on to the service. Aira helps people who are blind or have low vision enjoy art. Using their phone as a video camera, users communicate with an Aira agent, who describes the art and allows the museum visitor to see it in their mind’s eye and appreciate the piece.
Mistovich, of Boardman, has low vision and had been using the Aira app for several years.
Civil War Reenactment at Century Village
BURTON, Ohio – The Geauga County Historical Society & Century Village Museum will present a Civil War battle reenactment, field hospital and encampment May 25-26.
The event will include the premiere performance of “John Brown: The Dulcimer Diaries,” a musical production by Treva Offutt and Craig Matis. The show recounts the life and death of the abolitionist John Brown. It is an original composition of dulcimer music, song and live theater, which will be performed on the grounds of an 1800s active Western Reserve settlement.
Admission is $10 ($5 for children ages 4 to 10, and free for children 3 and under).
Guests will be able to tour historic buildings and exhibits, visit the Geauga County Maple Museum and watch the performance and battle reenactment.
Food and craft vendors will offer their products, and reenactors portraying Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln and Jefferson Davis will greet guests. Battle reenactments will take place daily between performances.
A Civil War Ball will take place in the Lennah Bond Activity Center on May 25. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The cost is $35 per ticket ($25 if dressed in Civil War-era attire) and includes dinner and dancing.
Auditions for ‘Beautiful’ at The Playhouse
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Auditions for the Youngstown Playhouse’s production of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” will take place from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, at the theater.
Callbacks will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 4. To schedule a five-minute audition time, email [email protected].
The roles of Don Kirschner and Genie Klein have already been cast. All other roles are
available for local casting, including the role of Carole King.

Friendly Squares Set Monthly Dance
NILES, Ohio – The Friendly Squares’ next monthly square dance will take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the Niles Scope Center, 14 E. State St.
