The Update | Pabstolutely Rock Fest, Jewish Film Festival Return
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Pabstolutely rock festival will return Saturday, Sept. 7, with 11 bands playing on an outdoor stage at The Royal Oaks bar, 924 Oak St. on the East Side.
Admission is $10.
Youngstown-based metal band DAGGRS will headline the event, which benefits Golden String and Purple Cat. Music will start at noon and continue until 11 p.m.
The full list of bands includes The Feral Cats, Punk Willie, Mother Elizabeth Thorne, Neighbor Dan, Album, Rabbit Dog, Friendship Commanders, Black Signal, the Hawtsies and Fear of Dancing.
The event will include food trucks, vendors and Royal Oaks barbecue.
Jewish Film Festival Features 10 Offerings
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The 2024 Youngstown Area Jewish Film Festival will begin Sept. 8.
The films in the annual event depict the broad spectrum of Jewish life and come from all over the world.
Unless otherwise noted, the films will be shown at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane.
Here is the schedule:
- “Kronk’s New Groove”: 1 p.m. Sept. 8; includes a challah making activity at 12:15 p.m.
- “Live at Mr. Kelly’s”: 3 p.m. Sept. 8; includes a virtual question and answer session with executive producer David Marienthalt; cookies and coffee will be served.
- “Supernova: The Music Festival Massacre”: 7 p.m. Sept. 10; includes a speaker presentation.
- “Four Winters”: 7 p.m. Sept. 12.
- “Supernova: The Music Festival Massacre”: 2 p.m. Sept. 15; at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave.; cookies and coffee will be served.
- “Jerry Lewis: The Man Behind the Clown” with the short “The Man Who Shot Hollywood”: 7 p.m. Sept. 16.
- “Freedom Runners” and “I’m not Filipina”: 7 p.m. Sept. 18.
- “Yaniv”: Time TBD, Sept. 22; cookies and coffee will be served; includes a live Yaniv Club presentation with filmmaker Benjamin Ducoff.

Charity Run/Walk at Shenango Campus
SHARON, Pa. – Penn State Shenango will hold its 13th annual Dr. Jane A. Williams Memorial 5K run/1-mile walk Saturday, Oct. 12.
Jane Williams, in whose honor the event is named, was a 25-year employee of Penn State Shenango before her death in 2012 after a brief illness.
Registration will begin at 8 a.m. the day of the event at the Shenango campus in downtown Sharon; online preregistration is also available.
Since 2012, more than $165,000 has been raised from this event. All donations benefit the Dr. Jane A. Williams Memorial Trustee Scholarship, which provides awards to students at the Shenango campus with financial need.
The Shenango campus will continue its 5K theme of “Buckeyes vs. Nittany Lions.” Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite Ohio State or Penn State gear. Special prizes will be awarded for the most spirited outfits.
Registration forms are available online until noon Oct. 11. Runners and walkers can also register by calling 724 983 2900 or register in-person until 8:30 a.m. on the day of the event.
The cost is $20 for runners and $15 for walkers on race day.

Auditions for ‘The Birthday Party’ at Selah
STRUTHERS, Ohio – Auditions for Selah Dessert Theater’s production of “The Birthday Party” will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 28 and 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 29.

Rehearsals will begin the first week of October. Performance dates are Nov. 7-9, 15-16 and 22-23.
The play, written by Nobel Prize laureate Harold Pinter, centers around Stanley, a reclusive musician who rents a room at a boarding house run by a couple. Their comfortable life is disrupted by a pair of mysterious and sinister men from Stanley’s past. Chaos and fear replace quiet routine in this tale of suspense.
Here are the cast requirements:
- Meg: A woman in her 60s, chatty, flirty, likes routine and wants to be liked.
- Petey: A man in his 60s and Meg’s husband, calm demeanor, keeps things running.
- Stanley: A man in his 30s, unkempt, enigmatic, becomes increasingly unhinged and paranoid.
- Lulu: A woman in her 20s, buxom and likes to control men.
- Goldberg: A man in his 50s, mysterious, menacing, mobster-like, charming.
- McCann: A man in his 30s, Goldberg’s right-hand man, quiet but violent and power hungry.
