The Update | Paw-lapalooza Dog Show; ‘Little Mermaid Jr.’ to Open; Theater Classes at Playhouse
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Junior League of the Mahoning Valley will present the inaugural Paw-lapalooza Dog Show on Saturday, Aug. 20, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Covelli Centre and Wean Park, downtown.
The event, which will include food and other vendors and music, said event chair Theresa Dellick.
Awards will be presented in several categories, including best talent, human-pet lookalike, obstacle course, friendliest disabled pup, and others. TV anchors Derek Steyers and Stan Boney will serve as celebrity judges and will be joined by First Ward Youngstown Councilman Julius Oliver, Dr. Jazmine Oliver, and area dog lover Sydney Schuler.
Dogs will be grouped in two divisions that include toy/small and medium/large. All Paw-lapalooza participants must be on a leash and owners are responsible for clean-up after their pups. Water and shade will be available.
Registration is $10 per pet, which includes entry into all categories. Each pet will receive a “doggy swag bag” filled with various useful items including a collapsible doggie dish.

‘Little Mermaid Jr.’ at Salem Theater
SALEM, Ohio – Salem Community Theatre, 490 E. State St., will present “The Little Mermaid Jr.,” a youth production, at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 and 6; and 2 p.m. Aug. 7. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door or in advance at salemcommunitytheatre.org.
Pro Vapes Opens in Boardman
BOARDMAN – Pro Vapes and Smoke Shop has opened at 6241 Market St. The shop, owned by Jamal Alsoufi, sells tobacco, vapes, exotic snacks, drinks, cigars, cigarettes, and all smoking needs.
It is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Playhouse Offers Fall Theater Classes
YOUNGSTOWN – Registration is now open for The Youngstown Playhouse fall classes and
Workshops, which will begin Sept. 10 and end on Oct. 15.
The six classes that are being offered are Little Monsters (5-8 years old); Stage Performance I (9-12 years old); Stage Performance II (9 to 12 years old); Creator’s Corner (13 to 17 years old); the Actor’s Toolbox (age 18 and up); and Friday Night Live (age 18 and up).

Workshops at Jewish Community Center
YOUNGSTOWN — The Paul and Yetta Gluck School of Visual Arts at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane, is offering several workshops in August. To register, go to jccyoungstown.org/visualarts. Here is the schedule:
“Support Through Expressive Arts” (age 18 and up), 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 15, a free expressive arts workshop on mental health wellness and healing.
“Fairies, Gnomes & Dragon,” (age 10 and up; $40), 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10 and 17. Participants will use air dry clay and recycled objects to create their own fantasy world.
“Mixed Media Abstract Collage” (all ages; $20), 5 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 18. Participants will combine various art materials to create a piece. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
