The Update | Selah Presents ‘A Walk in the Woods’; New Date for Fleetwood Mac Tribute
STRUTHERS, Ohio – Selah Dessert Theater will present “A Walk in the Woods,” a tense drama with timely appeal as it goes behind the scenes of negotiations between countries that in a heated standoff.
Performances will begin at 8 p.m. May 12-14 and 20-21 in the theater space on the second floor of Selah Restaurant,130 S. Bridge St.
Nominated for both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award, the play by Lee Blessing was inspired by a true event that happened during the Cold War.
The story follows two negotiators who work out an arms reduction plan between Russia and the United States but are sent back to the bargaining table by their respective governments.
After long hours of talks, Russian Andrey Botvinnik suggests he and his American counterpart, Joan Honeyman, take a break go for a walk in the woods in Geneva, Switzerland. Andrey is a seasoned negotiator, gregarious, charming and adept at changing the subject, but also cynical about the process.
Joan is an idealistic newcomer who is eager to make headway progress but is also a no-nonsense negotiator. The two learn about each other and eventually find mutual respect and friendship.
With war raging in Ukraine, the play offers a ray of hope that people from countries with animosity toward each other can talk through their differences.
Medford Mashburn takes on the role of Andrey Botvinnik, while Molly Galano plays Joan Honeyman.
The characters’ contrasting personalities make for some delightful situations and laughter amid serious discussions, said Mary Ruth Lynn, who is directing the Selah production with assistance by Frank G.Martin.
Brian Palumbo is the set designer, Jeffrey Chann is handling the lighting and Johnny Pecano is in charge of sound design.
