The Update | Summer Movies, Concerts, Car Shows at Local Parks

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The city’s annual summer movies in the park series will include seven films, each screened in Wean Park, next to Covelli Centre.

All films start at 9 p.m. and are free to attend. Here is the schedule:

  • June 26: “Jaws” (1975).
  • July 3: “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (2017).
  • July 10: “Jumanji” (1995).
  • July 17: “Big Hero 6” (2014).
  • July 24: “Elf” (2003).
  • Aug. 7: “Field of Dreams” (1989).
  • Aug. 14: “Wakanda Forever” (2022).

Concert Series at Riverwalk Park

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – This year’s free summer concert series on Friday evenings at Riverwalk Park, downtown, will feature six shows.

Each concert starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. Each evening will feature dining, dessert and drink options from The Confluence, VentiSei Winery and Nina’s Italian Ice, as well as other vendors and food trucks.   

Here is the schedule:

  • June 3: The Wait.
  • June 30: Totally 80s.
  • July 7: Casanova & The Divas Band.
  • July 21: The Wrangler Band.
  • July 28: The DiMuccio Duo, The River Saints and The Medusa Flyers (benefit for Wounded Warrior).
  • Aug. 11: The Dorals.

Theater to Screen ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’

WARREN, Ohio – The rock opera film “Jesus Christ Superstar” will be screened at the Robins Theatre at 7 p.m. June 9. Tickets are $7; all seats are general admission.

The 1973 movie musical directed by Norman Jewison was adapted from the Broadway show written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

It recounts the last days of Jesus Christ from the perspective of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot.

The film stars Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson and Yvonne Elliman.

Writers to Appear at Lit Youngstown Event

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The next installment of Lit Youngstown’s First Wednesday Readers Series will take place Wednesday, June 7, in the Trophy Room of Westside Bowl and feature fiction writers Arya F. Jenkins of Youngstown and Rose M. Smith of Columbus.

Alex Harper will co-host the free reading, which will be followed by an open-mic session.

Jenkins is a Colombian-American poet and writer who has received several nominations for the Pushcart Prize and, in 2021, a nomination for the Best of the Net Anthology.

Rose M. Smith’s work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies.

The July 5 reading will feature Stephanie Kendrick of Athens, Ohio, and Julio Montalvo Valentin of Buffalo, New York.
