The Update | William Shatner at Packard Hall; Showcase for Rust Belt Theater Actor

WARREN, Ohio – Tickets are still available for William Shatner’s appearance at Packard Music Hall on Thursday, Sept. 26.

Shatner, who played the iconic role of Capt. Kirk in the original “Star Trek” television series and starred in other TV series and movies, will share behind the scenes stories from his career and answer questions from the audience. The event will begin with a screening of the classic 1982 film “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan.”

Rust Belt Theater Actor in Showcase Event

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Rust Belt Theater will present “Cielito,” a musical storytelling event featuring Nicole Zayas-Balaz at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28, at Rust Belt Theater, inside Club Switch, 221 Belmont Ave., downtown.

“Each year we choose one of our performers to do an actor showcase,” said Robert Dennick Joki, director of the theater. “It’s always someone who has been an MVP for the Rust Belt Theater Company. As a founding member of the theater, Nicole’s showcase is long overdue.” 

Zayas-Balaz has been performing in community theater and as a cantor in the Catholic church for the past 20 years. She will take the stage with some of her closest friends to perform selections inspired by her Latino heritage. Music will include traditional theater numbers, as well as locally written Rust Belt favorites, touching on themes of community, family, queer love, culture and the inspiration for her life’s work as a psychotherapist.

Scrappers to Again Present Trick or Treat 

NILES, Ohio – The Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ annual Trick or Treat at Eastwood Field will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 (rain date, Oct. 24).

The event is a fun and safe way to celebrate Halloween for children age 12 and younger. Ticket quantities are limited and are available on a first come, first served basis. Children and adults will require a ticket, which are $1 and can be bought at the Scrappers team office at Eastwood Field. 

Anyone who donates nonperishable food items at the event for Feed Our Valley will receive a free general admission Scrappers ticket valid during the 2025 season.

Returning for the 2024 Trick or Treat event is the Fast Pass ($10), which is available for only the first 100 kids. It includes admission for one child and two adults and allows the holders to skip the line and enter at 5:45 p.m. Purchasers will receive a wristband.

Oktoberfest Returns to Boardman Park 

BOARDMAN, Ohio – Boardman Rotary Club’s annual Oktoberfest will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, in Boardman Park, 375 Boardman-Poland Road.

The event will feature vendors, children’s activities and live entertainment. Admission is $5.

The event was started in 1976 and has grown into the area’s largest one-day arts and crafts event, drawing vendors from five states. Visitors often arrive by the busload.

ACTS Theater Reveals Upcoming Season

SHARON, Pa. – The ACTS Performing Arts Center’s 2024-2025 season features a diverse lineup of musicals, plays and special concerts.

Here is the schedule:

  • “ACTS Miscast,” Broadway classics, performed in the cabaret room, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 and 28; and 2:30 p.m. Sept. 29. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students.
  • “The Addams Family,” a comedy revolving around the quirky and morbid Addams family, in the main theater. This production will feature the debut of the venue’s new LED scenery wall. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11-12 and 18-19; and 2:30 p.m. Oct. 13 and 20. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for students. 
  • A screening of the cult classic film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” complete with prop bag, will take place Oct. 26 at 9 p.m. in the cabaret. Tickets are $12. This motion picture is rated R.
  • “A Rat Pack Christmas,” featuring Rat Pack songs with a festive twist, along with American standards by Rosemary Clooney and Ella Fitzgerald. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6-7; and 2:30 p.m. Dec. 8. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for students.
  • “Sweeney Todd,” the macabre Broadway smash, on the main stage, at 7:30 p.m. March 28-29 and April 4-5 and 11-12; and 2:30 p.m. March 29 and April 6. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for students.
  • “And Then There Were None,” the Agatha Christie classic, at 7:30 p.m. May 9-10 and 16-17; and 2:30 p.m. May 11 and 18. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for students.
  • “A ’70s Summer,” at 7:30 p.m. June 6-7; and 2:30 p.m. June 8. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students.

Trick Dog Expo Returns to Collingwood Center

CAMPBELL, Ohio – The Eastern Regional Trick Dog Expo Tridex will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 5 and 6 at Collingwood Center, 633 Porter Ave.

This event is in conjunction with the Do More With Your Dog trick dog, stunt dog, canine conditioning fitness and animal actors programs created by Kyra Sundance. Tridex offers both morning and afternoon workshops.

Tricks are meant to inspire and entertain audiences, and Do More With Your Dog is the official governing and sanctioning body for the sport of dog tricks.

‘John Carpenter’s Halloween’ at Robins Theatre 

WARREN, Ohio – “John Carpenter’s Halloween” will be screened at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the Robins Theatre.

Tickets are $7. 

The 1978 slasher film was directed and scored by Carpenter, who co-wrote it with its producer, Debra Hill. It stars Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis (in her film debut), P. J. Soles and Nancy Loomis. 

Lit Youngstown Readers Series

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Lit Youngstown’s First Wednesday Reader Series will present readings by James B. DeMonte and Michael Loderstedt at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in the lower level of West Side Bowl, 2617 Mahoning Ave. 

DeMonte’s books include “Where Are Your People From?” And “Brotherhood.” The Kent resident teaches English and directs international education at Lakeland Community College.

Loderstedt’s debut book of poetry, “Why We Fished,” received the UK Poetry Book Awards’ silver award in 2023. 

Labra Brothers to Perform in Downtown Sharon 

SHARON, Pa. – Downtown Sharon’s live music series on the grassy area on East State Street will conclude Friday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., with The Labra Brothers. 

The show was rescheduled from the original August date. Admission is free. Guests can bring blankets or lawn chairs.
