The Update | Youngstown Sets Date for Holiday Parade and Market

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The annual holiday parade, light-up night and Flea on Phelps Street outdoor market will take place Friday, Dec. 1, downtown.

The Flea will take place from 4 to 8 p.m., with the parade starting at 6 p.m. and the lighting of the Christmas tree on Central Square at approximately 7:15 p.m.

The event will include photos with Santa Claus and an adjacent Santa’s Gift Shop.

Oh Wow! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology will be open from 4 to 6 p.m.

The event is presented by the city of Youngstown, Youngstown CityScape, the Downtown Youngstown Partnership and title sponsor Premier Bank.

Theater Presents ‘Dr. Jekkyl and Mr. Hyde’

SALEM, Ohio – Salem Community Theatre will present “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” for four performances this weekend.

The story is told from the perspective of Newcomen, the inspector from Scotland Yard who is attempting to solve the crimes.

Tyler Moliterno is the director.

Performances are at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday, Oct. 28, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. The theater is at 490 E. State St.

TubaChristmas Seeks Musicians, Vendors

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The annual TubaChristmas concert and holiday craft show will take place Sunday, Nov. 26, at Stambaugh Auditorium.

The craft show will begin at 11 a.m., with the concert at 3:30 p.m.

TubaChristmas is a national program in which concerts are performed throughout the country. This is the 25th year the event has taken place in Youngstown.

Holiday Light Display Program Will Raise Funds

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Spanning the Need, in partnership with 330ToGO, is creating a drive-by Christmas Loop in the Mahoning Valley that will showcase the best holiday displays.

The loop will also serve as a platform to raise money for charities.

Families, individuals and organizations are asked to submit their addresses for participation in the Christmas Loop, whether it’s a holiday light display, a heartwarming nativity scene or a festive wonderland that you want to share with the community. 

Participants are asked to include information about any charities they are supporting through their holiday displays.

The Christmas Loop will debut the week of Nov. 27.

Valley Arts Groups Receive Grants

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Arts Council board recently approved 182 grants totaling $587,902 to support Ohio artists, arts and cultural organizations, students, educators and public arts programming.

Five Mahoning Valley organizations were among the recipients. They are:

  • Chrystal Robinson, Beloit, $2,500, Artists with Disabilities access program.
  • Lepper Library, Lisbon, $5,000, ArtsRISE diversity access program.
  • Ronald Van Hoose, Youngstown, $2,500, Artists with Disabilities access program.
  • Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past, Youngstown, $4,750, ArtsRISE.
  • Youngstown Parks Department, $5,000, ArtsRISE.

Walking Tour of Warren Cemetery

WARREN, Ohio – The Trumbull County Historical Society will present a walking tour of Oakwood Cemetery, 860 Niles Road SE, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28.

Tickets are $10, and reservations are required; call 330 394 4653. Participants will meet at the cemetery gate house.
