The Update | YSU Marching Band to Preview Its Halftime Show

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Meet the Marching Pride, the annual season-opening performance of Youngstown State University’s marching band, will take place at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at Stambaugh Stadium. 

The event is free and open to the public.

Under the leadership of Kate Ferguson, director of athletic bands, the YSU Marching Pride will preview the music that it will perform at Penguins football games this fall.

The performance will highlight the band’s drumline, featured twirlers, Penguinettes, color guard and others.

Parking will be available for a nominal fee in the M-81 surface parking lot across from the Watson and Tressel training site, accessible from Service Road.

Beach Bash at Mosquito Lake State Park

CORTLAND, Ohio – The second annual Mosquito Lake Beach Bash will take place Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Mosquito Lake State Park beach, from 5 to 9 p.m.

The free event will include live music by Before Closing, food trucks and other attractions. Attendees should bring lawn chairs or a blanket.

Lecture on Youngstown Artist Albert Parella

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown native Albert Parella enjoyed a stellar career as an advertising executive, art director and art teacher, all while staying true to his original passion, watercolor painting.

Carla Davanzo of the Poland Historical Society will discuss the artist at noon Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Tyler History Center, downtown, as part of the Bites and Bits of History lecture series of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.

Guests can bring a lunch for this free event in the Thomas Ballroom.

Honey & Lavender Festival at The Freightyard

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Honey & Lavender Festival will take place from from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at The Freightyard, 1588 Mahoning Ave., behind Trek Coffee House on the West Side.

This event, sponsored by Trek, will celebrate honey and lavender, offering a blend of scents, flavors and family-friendly activities.

It will feature drinks and pastries infused with honey and lavender. A vendor market will feature honey and lavender products, baked goods and soaps. Children can participate in crafting butterfly-themed projects, and there will be a pollinator presentation by the Columbiana Mahoning County Bee Keepers Association.

Helms Foundation Art Therapy Programs

WARREN, Ohio – The Helms Foundation will present a four-week art therapy program to help individuals feel a sense of belonging in their community by creating either a beaded suncatcher or a mindful weaving project.

The programs will start Aug. 13, 20, 27 and Sept. 3 at 153 Pine Ave. NE, Warren.

The Helms Foundation will also have a self-expression therapy art program for members of the LGBTQ community, with sessions beginning Aug. 13, 20 and 27.

Symphony Sets Auditions for Several Positions

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Auditions for several instrumentalist positions with The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra will take place in September at DeYor Performing Arts Center, downtown.

Auditions for principal, second and fourth horn positions will take place Sept. 3. Auditions for principal clarinet will take place Sept. 4. Auditions for principal and section bass positions will take place Sept. 5.

The YSO is a per-service ensemble with a season consisting of approximately 25 regular services and varying educational and outreach services. Pay is $133.40 per service for principals and $116 per service for section players. Cartage and doubling is added when applicable.
