Tim Ryan Spars with Tucker Carlson over James Comey

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan sparred with Fox News host Tucker Carlson last night about the FBI’s investigation of Hillary Clinton’s email server, Russia’s meddling in the presidential election and whether Democrats are essentially being hypocritical for not calling on James Comey to resign.

Carlson, the replacement at 8 p.m. for former Fox ratings giant Bill O’Reilly, argued that Democrats accuse Comey of abusing his power and costing Hillary Clinton the election yet still trust him, because it serves their political purposes, to investigate collusion between the Trump campaign and operatives of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Why don’t Democrats call for his resignation?” Carlson asked.

Ryan pushed back by noting that FBI directors are appointed for 10 years and are “supposed to be insulated from politics” and the FBI investigation is just one of the ongoing probes into Russia’s meddling.

Comey testified Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee. “It makes me mildly nauseous to think that we might have had some impact on the election,” he said. “But honestly, it wouldn’t change the decision” to tell Congress Oct. 28 that the FBI had reopened its investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server.

The Democrat from the Mahoning Valley would not be drawn into agreeing with Clinton’s statements Tuesday that Comey’s disclosures 10 days before the election cost her the presidency. Instead, Ryan said the No. 1 reason why Clinton lost is that her campaign lacked a coherent economic message.

The interview was uploaded to YouTube by the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee, which described it as “explosive.” The GOP group has said it’s targeting Ryan and his congressional district in 2018.
