U-Haul to Convert Former Grocery Store into Storage Facility
WARREN, Ohio – A vacant building that once housed a Tops Friendly Market grocery store on North River Road will be repurposed into an indoor, climate-controlled storage facility operated by U-Haul, a local commercial real estate agent said Wednesday.
Amerco Real Estate Co., the real estate development arm that provides services for U-Haul, has acquired the former supermarket at 2425 North River Road, a second attached parcel at 3406 Elm Road that once housed a CVS Pharmacy and the former Chase Bank building at 3395 North River for $3.27 million, according to records from the Trumbull County Auditor.
“There are certain segments in real estate that are thriving and are viable,” said Bill Kutlick, agent for Platz Realty Group, who handled the sale of the buildings.
Among these are storage facilities, he noted. “That segment is pretty strong.”
The former supermarket has been vacant for more than 10 years, Kutlick said. Platz secured a contract to list the property approximately eight months ago.
Kutlick noted that the former Chase Bank building will serve as offices for the U-Haul operation.
Auditor records show that the sales closed July 24. Elmhurst Properties is listed as the previous owner. The supermarket and former CVS buildings combined consist of approximately 59,000 square feet of space, while the former bank would provide 4,115 square feet of office space.
