Ultium Cells Reaches Milestone in Tennessee
SPRING HILL, Tenn. – Workers on the Spring Hill, Tennessee, Ultium Cells battery cell manufacturing facility site have installed their final beam for the 2.8-million-square-foot operation.
A “topping off” ceremony was held as the final beam was placed. Leaders, trade partners and employees signed the beam in commemoration.
The facility was designed for mass production of Ultium battery cells. Joint venture partners, General Motors and LG Energy Solution, will be utilizing the site.
Ultium Cells says the $2.3 billion investment will “support U.S. EV manufacturing, local jobs, education, career training and infrastructure.”
The full completion of the project is projected to be finished in 2023. Ultium Cells says 550,000 hours have already been put into the facilities development. Nashville based, Good Wood furniture pieces and wall treatments will also be included in the steel structure.
Kee Eun, President of Ultium Cells, says strong support from Tennessee, Maury County, Spring Hill and construction partner collaborations, made the milestone possible. Around 500 men and women worked on the site daily, he says.
“We are pleased with the rapid progress we have made constructing our latest Ultium Cells site, all with safety as our priority,” says Eun.
The new facility is coming with many opening positions. Ultium Cells they are currently hiring for key positions for the launch and set up of the manufacturing facility. The company plans to hire 50 new launch team members by the end of the year – part of its goal to create 1,300 jobs created within the Tennessee facility.
“This is a significant milestone for the Ultium Cells team and our construction trade partners as we continue to make strides safely and at an unprecedented pace,” says Chris Desautels, plant director of Ultium Cells Spring Hill. “This is a fundamental mark in our journey as Ultium Cells, and I look forward to more foundational moments as we begin to build an inclusive and engaged workforce. I am both humbled and thrilled to be a part of this growing team.”
The Ultium Cells facility in Warren, Ohio, will begin battery cell production in August, Ultium Cells says. The construction of the Lansing facility in Michigan is slated to start production in 2024 and is currently under construction.
