Unemployment Claims Drop Slightly

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – New jobless claims filed by Ohioans during the week ended October 8 fell compared to the previous week. At the same time, continued unemployment claims held their downward trend, according to data released this morning from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Ohioans filed 7,218 new traditional unemployment claims last week, a decrease of 22 claims filed the previous week. 

Initial jobless claims are up by nearly 1,000 since the end of August, when the number of weekly claims stood at 6,310.

Continued jobless claims stood at 27,284 for the week, a decrease of 1,082 claims, ODJFS said.

Ohio’s unemployment rate in August was 4% compared to the national unemployment rate of 3.7%. 

Ohio’s labor force participation rate in July was 61.8%, while the national labor force participation rate for the month stood at 62.4%.
