Unemployment in the Valley Declines in July

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Area unemployment rates in July edged down from the month before and were down markedly from a year earlier, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Tuesday.

Unemployment in Trumbull County last month was 4.2%, down a full percentage point from July 2022’s 5.2% rate and down from 4.4% in June.

Mahoning and Columbiana counties both reported 4.0% unemployment rates in July, also down for both counties from 4.3% in June and 5.1% in July 2022.

The Mahoning Valley’s two largest cities, Youngstown and Warren, posted identical unemployment rates of 5.3% in July, the highest among Ohio cities tracked and each similarly down from 5.6% the month before. Youngstown’s rate was down from 6.9% a year earlier, and Warren’s was down from 6.8%.

The unemployment rate for the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area was 4.1%, down from 4.3% the month before and from 5.2% in July 2022. The MSA covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania.
