Unemployment Rates Remain Largely Unchanged in February

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Area unemployment rates showed little change month over month, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Tuesday morning.  

Trumbull County’s unemployment rate of 6.1% last month and Mahoning County’s 5.9% rate were each up just a 10th of a percentage point from January, while Columbiana County’s February rate was unchanged from the  month before.

In February 2021, Trumbull County’s unemployment rate was 8.8%, Mahoning County’s was 8.0% and Columbiana County’s was 7.1%.

The Mahoning Valley’s largest city, Youngstown reported a modest decline in unemployment month over month, posting a 6.5% rate in February. That was down from 6.7% in January as well as from 10.0% in February 2021.

The city of Warren also reported a modest decline, from 6.8% in January to 6.7% in February. Its February 2021 rate was 11.0%.

The Youngstown-Warren metropolitan statistical area, which encompasses Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania, reported a 6.0% in employment rate in February, unchanged from January’s rate. The MSA posted an 8.4% unemployment rate in February 2021.
