Utica Rig Count Falls to 21

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The number of oil and gas rigs operating in eastern Ohio’s Utica shale dropped to 21 during the week ended Dec. 21, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The Utica’s rig count stood at 23 the previous week, according to data.

ODNR issued 10 permits for new horizontal wells during the week. Three permits were issued to Eclipse Resources LP, and three more awarded to CNX Gas Co. for wells in Monroe County.

Gulfport Energy Corp. and Ascent Resources each secured two permits for wells in Belmont County, ODNR reported.

As of Dec. 2, ODNR has issued 2,694 permits for horizontal wells. Of that number, 2,184 have been drilled and 1,735 are in production.

ODNR did not issue permits for wells in the northern Utica region, which encompasses Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties in Ohio. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection also did not issue permits for wells in neighboring Mercer and Lawrence counties during the week.
