Utica Rig Count Stands at 20 in Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The rig count in Ohio’s Utica shale nudged upward to 20 during the week ended June 27, according to the latest report from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ weekly oil and gas activity update.

The rig count was 19 the previous week, ODNR reported.

Meanwhile, ODNR issued eight horizontal well permits during the week of the 27th, twice as many as the week of the 20th.

Four permits were issued to Hess Ohio Developments LLC for wells in Harrison County while three were awarded to Chesapeake Exploration LLC – two in Carroll County and one in Harrison. A single permit was issued to American Energy Utica LLC for a well in Harrison County.

To date, 1,943 permits have been issued in the Utica shale play that lies within Ohio. Of that number, 1,520 are drilled and 909 are in production, according to ODNR records.

No new permits were issued last week for Trumbull, Columbiana and Mahoning counties, according to ODNR.

However, Hilcorp Energy Co., the most active driller in the northern tier of the Utica shale, received a permit for a new horizontal well in Lawrence County, Pa., according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The well is on the Pomerico property in Neshannock Township.

No new permits issued for Mercer County, Pa., the DEP said.
