Mahoning Valley Auto Sales Rise 5.3% in 2019

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Auto sales in the area ended the year up 5.3% over 2018, according to data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association, as 58,863 new and used cars were sold.

Across Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties for 2019, new-car sales rose 3.9% to 32,809, while used-car sales were 6.8%. 

“We had a very strong close to the year, with light duty trucks and SUVs carrying the load. In addition to a small increase in demand for new cars, used vehicle sales continued to outpace previous years,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, president of the association, in a statement. “We anticipate similar demand in 2020 as the new models have already arrived in dealerships and will be showcased at the upcoming Cleveland Auto Show.”

Combined new and used sales for the association’s membership were up 8.2% to 106,845.

Sweeney Chevrolet , Boardman, topped the local new-car sales chart for 2019 with 2,281 delivered to customers. It was the only dealership in the three counties to crest the 2,000-car mark. Following were Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, with 1,946 sold; Sweeney Buick GMC, Boardman, with 1,638; Sweeney Buick GMC, Boardman, 1,638; Boardman Subaru, Boardman, 1,598.

Greenwood Chevy topped the full-year sales chart for used cars with 1,236 sold. Taylor Kia of Boardman and Fred Martin Ford, Austintown, were the only two dealerships to sell more than 1,000 used vehicles, with 1,117 and 1,023, respectively.

In December, Boardman Subaru topped area dealers with 161 new cars sold. Rounding out the top five were Stadium GM, Salem, with 146 sold; Sweeney Buick GMC, 144; Taylor Kia, 127; and Sweeney Chevrolet, 123.

Fred Martin Ford led used-car sales with 96 sold. 

Across the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association’s 22-county membership area, only one local dealer, Boardman Subaru ranked in the top 10 for combined new and used sales.
