Valley Unemployment Rates Climb in January

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Area unemployment rates in January jumped nearly more than a full percentage point, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported Tuesday. 

Warren’s unemployment rate rose to 9.6% in January, up from 8% in December, according to the state report. Youngstown’s unemployment rate was 9.3% in January, up from 8.4% the month before. 

In January 2020, Warren’s unemployment rate was 8.3%, while Youngstown’s rate was 7.7%. 

The rise in Warren’s unemployment rate boosted Trumbull County’s by 1.2 percentage points month over month. Trumbull posted a 7.6% unemployment rate in January, up from 6.4% in December and matching the county’s rate in January 2020. 

In Mahoning County, the January unemployment rate was 7.3%, up from 6.2% in December slightly above the January 2020 rate of 7.1%. 

Columbiana County reported a 6.6% unemployment rate in January, compared with 6.4% a year earlier and 5.8% in December.   

The January unemployment rate for the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan statistical area, which covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County, Pa., was 7.9% in January, up from 6.6% in December and 7.0% in January 2020.
