Warren Philharmonic Offers Free Violin Lessons
WARREN, Ohio — A select group of third through seventh-grade students in Trumbull County will receive free violin lessons courtesy of the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra.
Through the orchestra’s Strings of Joy program, a “limited number of students” will take part in the lessons with age-appropriate violins and printed sheet music loaned by the orchestra. The individual, 20-minute lessons will be held Sunday afternoons through December 2019 with a summer break. Occasional group lessons and performance opportunities will also be scheduled, said Attorney Frank R. Bodor, president of the orchestra’s board of trustees.
“The Strings of Joy program continues the Orchestra’s outreach to area school children,” Bodor said. “With string programs eliminated from most area schools, the Strings of Joy program helps fill a need for those students interested in learning to play the violin and develop a deeper appreciation for our musical heritage.”
The orchestra performed a live concert for area students in October, and winners of the student Art in Music Contest will be announced at the April concert, he said. “We appreciate the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber Foundation, other community organizations and individual donations that make Strings of Joy possible at no cost to the students,” he said.
This is the third class for the program and students will join those who have been taking classes since January 2016. Professional musicians from the region will teach the lessons at Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. NE. The application deadline is Dec. 3, 2018, and classes begin Jan. 6, 2019. An application form and related documents are available to download from the WPO website at www.warrenphilharmonic.org/strings-of-joy-2018-2019.html or can be requested from the WPO office.
Parents or guardians must provide transportation for the lessons, provide encouragement and practice space and assume ultimate responsibility for the instrument.
