Weekend Entertainment | Chalk the Walk, Talk the Talk
The leaves have begun to change colors, which is nature’s equivalent of getting gray hair.
It’s a harbinger of the inevitable end.
That’s not a cheery thought, but let it serve as a wake-up call. There is still time to enjoy what’s left of summer.
For starters, you can head to downtown Youngstown after work Friday for the city’s monthly First Friday party. It’s a chill way to unwind outdoors after the workweek, with live music and artisanal vendors.
To make this month’s event more special, there will be a Chalk the Walk contest. Businesses and others can decorate the sidewalks with chalk works of their own design from 3 to 7 p.m. To register, go to firstfridaysyoungstown.org.
First Friday actually starts at 4 p.m. on South Phelps Street. Jack and the Cadavers will perform on the small stage there from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and Demos Papadimas and his band will play from 6 to 8 p.m.
The evening will include an exhibition of works by local artist Daniel Rauschenbach at Concept Gallery on West Federal Street from 5 to 8 p.m., and line dancing with Stepping Out Fitness at Octave, on North Phelps Street, at 5:30 p.m.
Downtown bars and restaurants will also be open if you care to pop in for a drink or dinner.
At 8 p.m., the action will move to the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre for a free Elton John-Billy Joel tribute concert by Lee Alverson.
The Columbiana Street Fair – which just might be the final street fair of the summer – gets started tonight and runs through Saturday. Expect a row of vendors, games and other shenanigans extending for several blocks along Main Street. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. today, 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday.
Now in its 17th year, the Pabstolutely rock festival will take place Saturday at the Royal Oaks bar, 924 Oak St., on Youngstown’s east side.
Eleven bands will perform on an outdoor stage at the event, which also has a vendor marketplace, a food truck or two and the Royal Oaks famous barbecue.
The bands come from far and wide and include hard rockers DAGGRS, Album and Neighbor Dan.For a complete look at everything going on in the Mahoning Valley, check out The List.
