Weekend Entertainment | Festivals Rooted in History

There is no patron saint of street festivals.

But if there was, Our Lady of Mount Carmel would be a good choice.

In the Mahoning Valley alone, there are three Mount Carmel festivals each year: Lowellville, Niles and Youngstown.

For reasons that go back to the founding of Catholic parishes for Italian immigrants in the early 20th century, all three festivals are deeply rooted in Italian culture.

While many Valley residents have been to an Our Lady of Mount Carmel festival, probably few know about her.

The name dates back to the 12th century, to an order of monks who lived on Mount Carmel, in what today is northern Israel. The monks were devoted to Mary, the Blessed Mother.

By the 13th century, the order became known as the Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Carmelite order would soon branch out across Europe.

Locally, the Mount Carmel Society in Lowellville has launched its annual festival at its grounds at 102 Washington St., on the west side of the village. Hours are 6 to 11 p.m. today through Saturday.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel church festival in Niles, 381 Robbins Ave., is also in full swing. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. today and Friday, 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday and 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Next weekend, July 25-28, is the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival in Youngstown.

Several other festivals this weekend include:

  • The Mahoning Valley Irish Festival, which will take place at Penguin City Brewing in Youngstown from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.
  • Lebanese Fun Fest, at St. Maron Church, 1555 S. Meridian Road, Youngstown, 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.
  • New Castle Fireworks Festival, Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m., in downtown New Castle, Pa.
