Weekend Entertainment | Returning Favorites and a 2-person Circus

Some favorites will return to the Mahoning Valley this weekend.

The Brier Hill Italian Fest in Youngstown – one of the most authentic Italian street festivals – starts tonight and runs through Sunday.

The great Dave Mason is also heading back to the Valley for an 8 p.m. concert Friday night at the Robins Theatre. Dave Mason’s Traffic Jam tour has the rock hall of famer playing fan favorites and deep cuts from his days with Traffic in the 1970s.

The Lawrence County Fair will come to its conclusion Saturday with the Flying Wallendas trapeze show, followed by fireworks.

Hardcore wrestling fans know about Ohio Valley Wrestling, which comes to Packard Music Hall at 7 p.m. Saturday. The minor league promotion known for producing future stars was the subject of “Wrestlers,” a 2023 Netflix documentary series.

If you’re looking for something new and different, check out The Great DuBois, which comes to the Robins Theatre on Saturday.

The act calls itself “the world’s most unique two-person circus show.”

The Great DuBois – pronounced Doo-BWAH – is the husband-wife team of Michael DuBois and Viktoria Grimmy. They put on a fast and funny show that turns traditional circus skills into something fresh and new.

“It’s like an old-school Vaudeville variety show that is funny and also high skill,” Michael DuBois said in a phone interview. “I’m more of a comic juggler, and my wife is an aerialist.”

DuBois was born in Ukraine, part of a family of circus performers that goes back five generations.

“We have very different styles, but they work well together,” DuBois said.

The audience will be treated to everything from juggling and aerial stunts to hula hoops, unicycle tricks, circus stunts, contortion and magic – all wrapped up in a blanket of comedy that includes audience interaction. Here’s an example.

The Great DuBois can also be seen in the 2017 movie “The Greatest Showman,” which starred Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum.

Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. show range from $25 to $35 and can be purchased at robinstheatre.com and the box office.

In keeping with the circus theme, the Robins Theatre will screen “The Greatest Showman” at 3 p.m. Saturday to get you in the mood.
