Workers Race to Ready Locker Rooms
WARREN, Ohio – With structural steel now up at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center at Warren G. Harding High School, the look and layout of the center are coming into focus.
About three quarters of the concrete for the second-floor walking track has been poured, says Rob Wilt, project superintendent for DeSalvo Construction, general contractor for the $36 million project.
In all, workers poured about 300 yards of concrete for the track, Wilt says. “We’re also inside the existing school doing the e-sports and golf-simulator rooms. We took over that right after school let out. We did the demolition. Now we’re building the new walls.”
High above the walking track, workers traverse the steel beams that span the 136,000-square-foot main area, placing roof decking that will become the base for the final roof.
Meanwhile on the eastern side of the structure, which Wilt refers to as area E, workers are detailing steel, putting in the final bolts and welding.
The priority is the locker rooms, however, situated on the northern side of the center. Brick is being laid and workers are installing the flat roof over the pre-cast roof, which consists of one foot of concrete. After that they’ll install the green roof.
The roof should be finished in the next few weeks, Wilt says. The goal is to have the locker rooms ready for use when football season begins Aug. 18.
At any given time, Wilt says, there are about 50 workers on site.
On this day, crews from Maderitz Concrete of Girard, Lencyk Masonry of Boardman, Komar Plumbing of Youngstown, and TEMA Roofing Services of Girard were on hand, as well as workers from Sodexo Roth of Youngstown and Leetonia Steel.
