ESCEO services more than 20 districts in eastern Ohio with support services ranging from pupil services and aides to work study and assistive technology. The Career Counseling team works directly with students, businesses and organizations to increase career readiness skills to help shape the region’s workforce of tomorrow as well as supports educators and administrators. The Mahoning Valley Business Advisory Council advises, supports and empowers educators in delivering instruction and experiences students need to develop relevant, in-demand employment skills appropriate for college, careers and/or military service.

Locally, JA of Mahoning Valley served 13,000 students and held 545 local classes in 2020-2021. In addition, 70 schools were reached by 410 local volunteers and 65,833 contact hours. Middle- and high-school topics include financial literacy, work and career readiness and entrepreneurship.

More than 80 manufacturers support the advancement of the industry through their involvement in the Penn-Ohio Manufacturing Collaborative throughout Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer and Lawrence in Pennsylvania. Services include a six-week manufacturing readiness program in which participants can develop workplace and personal skills through manufacturing-related learning, enter into a career pathway and gain basic skills for entry into more advanced manufacturing skill training. Successful completion earns nationally recognized, transferrable credentials as well as an opportunity to interview for entry-level production careers with local manufacturers.

The goal of the coalition is to attract the workforce needed for growth and expansion by offering seamless career pathways that enable individuals to enter and advance in strong and fulfilling manufacturing careers. MVMC provides a network for Mahoning Valley manufacturers to identify common needs and problem-solve with their partners, sharing ideas and resources to develop a skilled workforce. MVMC also serves as the lead agency for the group-sponsored model for the Greater Oh-Penn Manufacturing Apprenticeship Network, which allows for a streamlined approach to the administrative responsibilities associated with apprenticeships. Occupations that are part of this program are machinists, industrial maintenance and welding.

Youngstown Goodwill provides and develops services to its clientele in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties in Ohio and Mercer and Lawrence in Pennsylvania. Professional staff members help train productive, highly motivated workers. After completing Goodwill’s programs, further training may take place in community-based vocational settings with the ultimate goal placement in competitive employment in the community. Programs offered to that end include vocational evaluation and assessment, work experience, career readiness, job development and placement and career coaching. Goodwill also offers a variety of subcontracting services to business and industry that provide real-world work experience for clients.

TCBDD Employment Services assists individuals who want to work in the community to find and retain employment that matches their skills and interests. Through the program, individuals learn new skills, become part of a team and expand their opportunities and become more independent.
