WRTA Purchases Mahoning Avenue Building for $930K
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Western Reserve Transit Authority has acquired the building and land at 730 Mahoning Ave. that will serve as a storage facility as the organization ramps up an expansion at its nearby bus depot.
According to records from the Mahoning County Auditor’s office, WRTA paid property owner Brier Hill Slag Co. $930,000 for the building and 2.5 acres.
“It’s in pretty good shape. It’s got plenty of room for storage,” said Dean Harris, executive director of WRTA.
Harris said the purchase will help the transit authority store vehicles and buses as it begins construction of a new, updated bus barn at its main facility at 604 Mahoning Ave.
Long-term plans for the building and land have not been determined, Harris said. At this point, however, WRTA found it necessary to find additional space as it begins construction on its main bus garage. “We are running out of space,” he said.
Most recently, the building housed Clearview Building Products, which relocated, and is now being used for storage for Brier Hill Slag.
Last year, WRTA secured three federal grants worth $8.5 million that will be used to construct a modernized bus barn, complete design and reconstruction of its Federal Street station and replace older busses with zero-emission vehicles. WRTA has a goal of going all-electric by 2040 and expects to begin to transition its bus fleet to all-electric in 2026.
