Youngstown City Schools’ Parent YOU Resumes Thursday
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The next session of Youngstown City School District’s Parent YOU series will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, focusing on money management, literacy, diversity and college preparation.
The featured speaker is Damon Carr, a graduate of The Rayen School who now works as a money coach and personal finance columnist. Also speaking are Michelle Elia of the Ohio Department of Education’s literacy team discussing how to make students better readers and officials from the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio on unconscious bias.
School counselors Ann-Marie Meade and Jorge Vega Santos will help families of English learners in grades 8 through 11 understand what’s involved in preparing for college.
“The virtual meeting will allow parents to participate in sessions designed to educate and inspire,” said Youngstown City Schools CEO Justin Jennings in a statement. “We selected topics and speakers we believe will help parents themselves and help them help their scholars as well.”
The Parent You meeting can be watched via Zoom at THIS LINK.
The series, which runs through May, is part of the school district’s Parents Realizing Involvement Determines Education, or Pride, initiative. Parent You focuses on four pathways – social-emotional learning, literacy, diversity and college awareness – with participants following a track throughout the school year.
The first Parent You session last month featured Chef Jeff Henderson, who discussed how he transformed himself from prison inmate to renowned chef, author and speaker.
