Youngstown Press Club Event to Focus on Detained Journalist

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown Press Club will present a conversation with Paul Beckett, assistant editor at the Wall Street Journal, who is leading efforts to free reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was detained in Russia more than 10 months ago.

The “I Stand with Evan” event will take place at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Ford Family Recital Hall at DeYor Performing Arts Center, 260 W. Federal St. A reception will follow in Flad Pavilion featuring light refreshments and a cash bar.

Beckett will talk about Gershkovich, a Wall Street journal reporter who was detained while doing his job as a journalist, and what’s being done to secure his release. Brenda Linert, a Youngstown Press Club board member, will lead the conversation with Beckett and will moderate questions from the audience. The evening will be introduced by Lisa Bannon, a Youngstown-area native and senior reporter at the Wall Street Journal.

Tickets, which can be purchased HERE, are $25 for Youngstown Press club members and $30 for nonmembers.

To further support journalists’ rights, the Youngstown Press club will make a contribution to the Committee to Protect Journalists, a nonprofit organization that promotes press freedom worldwide.

The event is sponsored by the DeYor Performing Arts Center, Pecchia Communications, the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation, The Business Journal and the Edward M. Barr Foundation.
