Youngstown Unemployment Improves in February, Little Change Elsewhere

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Mahoning Valley unemployment rates in February were mixed according to reports from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Tuesday. 

Warren’s unemployment rate rose to 9.8% in February, up from 9.6% in January, according to the state report. Youngstown’s unemployment rate was 8.9% in February, down from 9.3% the month before. 

In February 2020, Warren’s unemployment rate was 8.3%, while Youngstown’s rate was 7.7%. 

Trumbull County posted a 7.9% unemployment rate in February, up from 7.6% in January and above the 7.1% rate in February 2020. 

In Mahoning County, the February unemployment rate was 7.2%, down slightly from 7.3% in January and above the February 2020 rate of 6.6%. 

Columbiana County reported a 6.5% unemployment rate in February, compared with 6.1% a year earlier and 6.6% in January 2021.   

The February unemployment rate for the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan statistical area, which covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County, Pa., was 7.8% in February, down slightly from 7.9% in January and well above the 6.6% rate in February 2020.
