YSU Athletics Adds Men’s Swimming, Women’s Lacrosse

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University will soon offer two new varsity sports: women’s lacrosse and men’s swimming and diving.

Men’s swimming and diving will begin competition this fall and women’s lacrosse will begin in the spring of 2021.

“We’re excited about this new opportunity to recruit high school students from Ohio, the region and internationally to pursue their academic and athletic goals at Youngstown State in both sports,” said director of intercollegiate athletics Ron Strollo in a release. “Our swimming facility is one of the best in the area and we look forward to showcasing it with both our men’s and women’s programs. The growth of women’s lacrosse in Ohio and throughout the Midwest has seen an increased number of schools sponsor the sport and we are thrilled to add it at Youngstown State.”

The lacrosse team will play at Farmers National Bank Field at the Covelli Sports Complex, while men’s swimming and diving will use the recently renovated Beeghly Natatorium.

Both sports will have rosters of roughly 25.

YSU will be the seventh Horizon League team to offer men’s swimming, joining Cleveland State University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, Oakland University and University of Illinois at Chicago.

For women’s lacrosse, YSU will be the second Horizon League school to offer the sport, following University of Detroit Mercy.
