YSU Steel Bridge Team Heads To Nationals
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter at Youngstown State University brought home three first-place finishes at a regional competition and has advanced to the nationals.
At the recent Ohio Valley Student Conference at the University of Akron, the Steel Bridge, Geotechnical and Concrete Fresbee teams took top honors. The Concrete Canoe team finished second and William Graham took third in the Technical Paper competition.
Competitors included teams from schools in Ohio, Kentucky and Western Pennsylvania, including University of Louisville, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Pittsburgh and the Ohio State University.
With its first-place win, the Steel Bridge team will compete at the Steel Bridge National Competition in Carbondale, Ill. May 31 to June 1. The competition focuses on the design, fabrication, construction and testing of a steel structure that meets specifications set annually by ASCE and the American Institute of Steel Construction.
Bridges are judged on construction speed, lightness, stiffness, economy, efficiency and aesthetics. At the regional competition, YSU placed first in four of the six categories. Team members include captain Spencer DeSalvo, Colton Hamilton, Alexander Miller, Thomas Carnes, Kenneth Anderson, Luis Vindel, Joshua Robinson, Nico Pagley, Matthew Hone, William Graham and Drew House.
