YSU’s Excellence Training Center Opens Monday

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University and partners from across the region will celebrate the completion of the Excellence Training Center with a ribbon cutting Monday.

At the corner of Fifth Avenue and Commerce Street, the Excellence Training Center is a two-story space for additive manufacturing research and development, automation and robotics training, metrology, industrial maintenance training, CT scanning, CNC machining classes offered in partnership with Eastern Gateway Community College and a “Foundry of the Future” with advanced mold-making technology. 

It also includes offices that will be rented by industry partners.

The $12 million project began in 2017 when the YSU board of trustees approved the purchase of the former Mahoning County Misdemeanor Jail. Among the funding sources for the project were $7 million in state capital funds and $5 million from the Economic Development Administration and Appalachian Regional Commission.

Partners in the Excellence Training Center includes Eastern Gateway, America Makes, the Youngstown Business Incubator, Choffin Career Center, Youngstown City Schools and the career and technical centers for Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

Among those who will take part once it’s completed are ExOne Co., the Department of Defense and the Air Force.
